cajunbulldog offers very good advice - check the company's reputation by going to the Better Business Bureau's website and looking them up, or any other company you are thinking of using for debt consolidation or settlement. Any unresolved complaints should throw up a red flag immediately, and you should investigate a little further on any company with a large number of resolved complaints.
