another asstaccptancllc question, please help

i am starting to get communications from this company via phone calls through relatives in another state and a letter at home. i have checked my cr and found that they put a hit on it under 'other accounts' with date major deliquency first reported as a couple of months ago and account status reported as 'too new to rate'.
i have a few questions, first what are my rights as a resident of va? second, should i send a dv letter to them certified (or is that a waste of time), or go through the credit bureau and dispute the entry so there is a 3rd party involved that might hold better to proper deadlines? if it is better to send a dv letter, should i use the format found here in a couple of the links on the website? the amount they are after is under 2k, with approx 40% discount off of that, (about 1k)if we settle by their 'deadline'. the credit card they are listing is not a card listed on my cr at all. there is no closed or charge off account whatsoever. also, if i send a dv letter, what specifically should i request? is there one formatted letter that is very thorough in this respect?
any help is greatly appreciated.

Go ahead and send the dv letter because you need to confirm that
Go ahead and send the dv letter because you need to confirm that the collector has legitimate reasons to report on your credit. They have to give you the info pertaining to your debt otherwise you can force the bureaus to remove their item from your file. The FCRA laws don't allow any company or the bureaus to keep inaccurate negative reporting in the consumer's file.
