When I was a kid my parents did nothing to teach me about budgeting we were well off until I was about 12 then suddenly we were bankrupt my parents got back on their feet but I have been working since I was 13 or so I do have some issues that may contribute to my debt like drug abuse and the like but I have always been employed and just cannot get out of mounting medical bills over 41,000 I have amassed in about 10 years

Welcome to the forums! I'm sorry to hear you've had a rough time in your life. However, your situation is not impossible.

Did you sign up for the free counseling session when you registered with this site? If so, a consultant will be contacting you soon by phone to discuss your situation. They will offer programs for debt settlement or consolidation of your debts. It's a good idea to have your credit report from all three reporting agencies handy when they call, so you have a good overall view of your debt load. You can obtain a free copy of all three reports once per year (or if you have been denied credit) from annualcreditreport.com. There is no fee or program to sign up for at that site.

You are under no obligation to sign up for the program offered by the consultant who calls you. You may decide to handle your debts on your own, or seek another debt consolidation or settlement agency on your own. It is possible you could work out payment arrangements with your medical creditors - they are often much easier to work with than credit card companies or payday lenders. Do you think that would work for you? It would save you the fees involved in debt consolidation or settlement, and many medical creditors will accept smaller payments per month than you might think. Simply paying them something - anything - every month, will show them you are at least trying to pay, rather than not paying anything at all, which will lead them to send you to a collection agency, which could eventually lead to a judgement being placed on your credit report.
