Unable to think of a good title.

I'm 30 years old, and $17,000 in debt. Thanks to taxes, I was able to pay down from $23,500. I finally was able to put a tax refund to good use 8) 8) 8) !
Used a PDL two or three times in my life, but it was only the deferred deposit (I believe that's what it was called) type. Fortunately, I didn't get into the PDL trap that has caught many of the other members of this forum.
A couple of years ago, I became disabled, and ended up taking out a $5,000 loan with a 29% interest rate. 20+ months of payments, and I had only paid $700 of the principal. What a @#*%! rip  . That was the first thing I paid off. A credit card was the second.
When I bought my last car, I was excited when I was offered a 12% apr. It was a good feeling to know that I was only getting 1/2 as screwed as I was before :x .
I only have a high school education, and I've FINALLY learned 2 things:
1)if you aren't a killer salesperson, it's damn hard to get somewhere worthwhile without an education, and,
2)working for someone else is a great way to make them far richer than yourself.
So I have a few relevant goals.
-Become debt free, and stay that way (save for maybe a mortgage some day)
-Get a freaking degree or solid skill set
-Go to work for myself
-Be the best damn father and husband I can be
Ok. That's my story. Perhaps I'll get around to doing up a blog to share more, and maybe even rant a little or something.

Morningstar,
Sounds like one heck of a plan and sounds like you've already gotten a degree from the school of life. Welcome! You've already identified your goal and I know you will get it.

You are already well in control of your situation before you ever find yourself completely lost. This is really good.

Oh, if only that were the case...you don't want to know some of the thoughts that have gone through my head lately...
But, in a most sincere manner, thank you all for the support. Drowning, with or without the presence of water is a most horrible sensation.
Hey Morningstar, I really think good about you. It's nice of you
Hey Morningstar, I really think good about you. It's nice of you that you took the time out and discussed about your plans. I am sure one of them who cannot think two steps ahead like you.
There is no doubt that you will be the best husband and the best father because you know taking care of the present times and your responsibilities. There is a lot to learn from you and others who are dealing with similar issues. I always find myself in panic when I plan something for the future, so I stay with my present and ensure that I am not completely lost. When are you starting your blog? I will be happy to read more of your thoughts.

I believe Col. Potter of MASH said,
"If you're not here, you're not anywhere."
Much like Yogi Berra's,
"Wherever you go, there you are."

Mostly, when I figure out how do that

Nice quote!! Makes you think that you are doing the right thing and it keeps you in focus. I believe you are also in the right track. :)

Just went through the mail...got something I've been waiting on. A PIF letter on my $5k loan. Glad that's behind me! I was paying $160 a month for 20 months. $3200 in payments, and I only paid $800 in principal  :x
I will never do business with Beneficial again. If I didn't need the cards for my credit score, I'd ditch the HSBC accounts (I understand Beneficial to be one of their subsidiary companies).
But I can't dwell on that too much. Life just got $160/month better-it's all going to my other debts. Yay me. Maybe I'll be free and clear when Halo 3 comes out. Then, I'd be able to afford the Xbox 360. I do miss my Halo, though. Sometimes I wish I wouldn't have sold my old Xbox. But, selling it started me out on getting debt free, so I shouldn't complain too much. In the end, it will all be worth it. 8) 8) 8)

Forgot to add this a few days ago...
Good news on something I haven't mentioned anywhere before! I have a lawsuit, and an attorney decided to pick up my case, he even said he'd agree to front all costs upfront! As much as I don't like living in California, sometimes, you can't beat it, either. Sorry if it's a little cryptic, it might not be a good idea to post the details online...but it is certainly good news!

Not looking at funding options. I won't be in the market for a house nearly as soon as I'd like to be. As for a degree, I have it narrowed down to a couple of interests-paralegalism, computers, and accounting. I'm not the white collar type, I prefer to wear dickies and what not, really can't stand ties. I know it sounds petty, but I've worn the monkey suit for a number of years and it got me nowhere. I'd rather be comfortable and doing something for me, instead of gilding my bosses pockets.
I'm kind of leaning in the direction of getting one or more microsoft certs, maybe learn website design and maintanance...I'm sure I could easily get a corporate job while not finding it too dificult to really strike out on my own.
My local CC offers 5-6 microsoft certs online, and the costs don't seem to be too excessive. I do want to try to stay away from schools like ITT, I suspect that the true purpose is to steer you into taking out large loans for tuition and stuff. Not that I have any evidence, I've just become a very cynical person in the last few years.

Morningstar,
I liked reading your story and your goals. I'm sure you will find an occupation that you will truly enjoy. I've been a suit for years but I'm used to it. I really don't mind it. I'm glad to hear about the amount of debt that you have been able to pay off. It gives me hope to continue with the plan that we are on. I thought I had to do it all at once but I'm trying to tackle one thing at a time. Some days it's hard enough just trying to keep one foot in front of the other. Good luck to you :-)

Yeah, but then I needed a new set of tires the other day, and I had to apply for and use a store credit card. Looking at the bright side, I was thankful for 2 things:
My wheels are 16", not 17" (saved a good chunk of change there)
6 month 0% interest offer. I should be able to pay down a decent amount before I start throwing away money on interest.

I can understand that but you need good tires. When I had my Outback, the tires were an odd size and only one manufacturer made them. They were over $100 per tire.

Yeah...if it were just me, I'd have gotten cheaper tires, but I want my kid to be as safe as can be.
