Wow $1000, was that for only one line? I had problems with sprint when I cancelled my service, but my cancellation fee was not that high.

Honestly if that is the case, there is no real way out of that, it is in the contract and they definitely would have told you that at the time you canceled.

Those companies usually only charge cancellation fees for early termination of your contract - even if it's a day early. And it is in your contract, even if they don't verbally make you aware of it, though most of them do make a point of mentioning the cancellation fee when you sign up.
I paid over $600 for a cell phone contract with two lines that got cancelled because I could no longer afford it - and $400 of that was cancellation fees - $200 per line.
