I noticed that I have on my CR a entry from progressive insurance that says I owe them 80 bucks. Now my question is this, Seeing how they canceled my auto insurance for it back in 2000 can they put in on my credit report since I did NOT benefit from it? I was set up on a 4 month payment plan, I did not pay my insurance payment one month and they canceled me.

By you not paying what you owed them, you became a past due debtor and gave them full authority to report it.

Now to fix this I would type up a letter asking them in a nice manner if they would remove tradeline in exchange for full payment. If they refuse, then you would have two choices that I can see from your post.
Dispute with cra as obsolete. If that fails,it should drop this year if it was placed in the year 2000.

You should be aware of another consumer reporting agency that keeps records on insurance and underwriting. I am going to include the url.Look on left hand side and order your clue report. It is free based on Facta disclosures.http://www.choicetrust.com/servlet/com.kx.cs.servlets.CsServlet?usertype=c

Cajun, I respet your advise and input, But, can they really report to the the CRA's for a service that was canceled by them and not used? They canceled the policy 7 days after the missed payment. SO that would be like having the power company shutting off your power for not paying for what you are going to use.

Since they cancelled for lack of payment,in most eyes of the law,it is considered as a breech of contract. If you had cancelled them yourself or have any written documentation or voice recordings disputing the cancellation as unfair or unwarranted, you may have some wiggle room there. Just as to your example about the utility bill. They can and will shutoff for nonpayment. They also have the right to come after you for the unpaid balance. I understand where you are coming from on your post.Just trying to give you the bald truth and ways to fix it.

You are not running away from the truth. This debt is already nearing the seven years mark and it will be automatically off from your file. However, in case you decide to pay the debt, your credit will improve slightly because there is no time line for positive entries staying in the report. But, in case you make a partial payment and then miss it, the negative effect will stay for longer time because the SOL will already be renewed from the last payment date. If you decide to pay, make sure that you pay in full otherwise, you can simply refuse it. The insurance company has already lost all grounds of any legal actions against you at this time.

Well, I've given you a direction.Get after it.Your easiest thing to do would probably be that dispute I mentioned with the credit bureaus. Just remember dispute as obsolete,ancient,old,dusty.etc. Glad to be able to help and you will have to do a lot more than that to get flamed around here. If you want to read about some very adverse posting,do a post search on Hess Kennedy Company. I am on there with some mods and we got pretty loud on that one!

Technically, it was used. Had you been in an accident during that time frame, you we covered for damage and liability. So they are reporting an unpaid service that was tendered to you but not repaid.

LOL Vlad....flamed by the right woman....

I can identify with your situation with Progressive. They came after me for the balance owed on my policy when it cancelled for non-payment when I went through some tough financial times.

They have every right to come after you for it, and to report it to the credit bureaus. They cancelled and charged you the pro-rated premium up to the date of the cancellation.

I'll never deal with Progressive again, after I obtained a quote from them for my new van and they tried to put it on a stated value only policy, with the stated value being the amount I paid for it ($1400). So any coverage I had on it would basically be null and void after the deductible. And on top of that, they were going to raise my premium by $250 every 6 months. They said it was classified as an "incomplete chassis" vehicle because it's a conversion van. I immediately called a small local agency and got full coverage, no questions asked about the "incomplete chassis", even when I mentioned it, for $400 less than Progressive.
