My big day at work...
Date: Fri, 02/23/2007 - 20:53
I work at a national power plant. The plant is currently doing some construction on its 18-story building where the offices and the boiler is. Outside of the building is a 38-story crane.
Yesterday morning at 6:45 am I was washing my hands in the bathroom, when there was an enormous BOOM and I fell into the sink. I wasn't scared, the maintenance workers use dynamite to blow apart the boiler, and the door to the deck of the boiler is right outside the administrators bathrooms, which is where I was. I started to leave the bathroom, and it happened again..This time I hit the door, and the lights went out. Ok, now I'm scared, because the building is shaking, and that sounded like a bomb. I went into the hall, and saw people running full speed. Someone yelled at me "Hit the stairs NOW!" So I ran to the stairwell. There were close to a hundred people racing down the stairs..Walkie talkies were blaring, people were yelling. I was petrified. All I could think of was 911. A voice over the intercom kept repeating "evacuate the building NOW"!
We got outside and were told that that crane fell on the building, and we were in danger of collapse.
I have never been so scared..It was by the grace of God that no one died...The maintenance men were in the elevator on the way out there when it happened. There were 6 guys, people I consider friends, on their way out to repair pipes where that crane crashed through. They would've been killed. I can't even explain how enormous that crane is..And the damage in unreal. It tore off the side of the building and half of the roof on that side. The bathroom I was in was only about 100 yards from where the hook fell.
I am still shaken up. It was an awful, awful event. We made the front page of the newspaper, and were the first story on the news last night.
So..I think I really need to do that job searching I have been wanting to do..I have my bachelors in Philosophy, any suggestions?

OMG, you should see it in person...You can't get really close because the guards won't let non-employees on site, but you can see it from the road..There are tons of gawkers out there.
That's just crazy...I'm glad everyone is ok!

Only one person had some injuries, and it was a very minor cut. We are so unbelievably lucky. It makes me sick to think of what would've happened if it was just 10 minutes later.
Irish, I could substitute, but in order to teach I think I'd have to get a few more credits.

That is some scary crap! I think it's a sign that it's time for a career change! Irish is right about teaching, especially at the college level, you could do it. Or writing, you've shown me a pretty good sample.
This is Ari by the way, in case it's ok for guest postings again.

Oh my GOSH! With a degree in Philosophy, teaching at the college level is a great idea. I bet with your degree, you thought about this event on lots of different levels. LOL!
