Basically, I'm in a tiny hole. I have racked up approximately $1500 dollars in debt. Both are credit card accounts. I've been avoiding collections calls for over a year. I keep thinking that I'll be able to save up enough money to just pay it back all at once, but unfortunately, that isn't the case. I just another college student who has become a statistic, but I don't think that I am so far in debt that I can't come out of this. I have become more financially stable in the past 6 months, but not enough to just pay off the roughly $900 I owe to capital one or the $350 I owe to american eagle. I hear about debt consolidation all the time, but I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into with it. I guess I need to do something, though. I'm tired of 800 numbers and restricted numbers calling my phone... Hopefully, you can give me the advice that I need. Thanks.

Welcome to the Community :D I know it seems like alot of debt for you, but since it isn't really high, have you tried to talk to the creditors about this? Sometimes they will drop the interest, etc., if you will commit to a payment plan, say for a year, and pay it off. How I got mine paid off was, I started with the lowest one-yours being 350- and paid extra each month and got it paid off. After it was paid off, I took the money I was paying them, plus my regular payment to the next one and worked at paying it off. Since you registered, someone will contact you for your free credit counseling and will discuss the options you have, such as consolidation. If you have any questions, please ask..Karen

I suggest you to call the credit card companies and put your payment proposals. Avoiding the collection calls will not be good. They will send the file back to the creditor saying that you are intentionally avoiding the payments and this might force the creditor to think about legal actions against you. Call them and try to pay as much you can afford. You don't have to pay the full amount in one time if some arrangement gets done.

You may also take professional help and enroll into a debt management program. You will get lower interest rates in your repayments. Most late payment fees will be waived off giving you a reduced balance. Consolidation will be a good move in catching up the payments and keeping your accounts current.

Call them and show them you are willing to make an effort to pay them off. If arrangments can be made with them, I think that would be the best thing to do. Look at what has happened as a lesson and learn from it. I know that things might look a little bleak right now, but honestly you are not too far in over your head that you cannot get out soon. Whatever you do, avoid getting any Payday Loans to help you pay this debt. It will only make things worse for you. This forum will offer all the help and advice you need to help get you through your situation. Just don't give up hope. But call the creditors. Sometimes you might be surprised and actually find someone that will work with you. Good Luck!

At this point, since you debt is so low, you really should talk to your creditors. Instead of waiting for them to call you, you call them. Just be honest about your situation and see what you can work out. Might want to do a budget up before you talk to them to see how much you can afford to each of them and go from there. Best to take care of it now before it gets worse.

I know what you mean about answering the phone!! But I called a credit card company and told them I really wanted to get this paid off, but with the interest and such, I was going no where. I asked if they could drop the interest so that I could, and they did. Alot of cc companies have a program where they will let you do this. You don't have anything to loose, and it might help. If they yell or say no, don't talk to them by phone, just do your payments!!..Karen
