what is a good debt settlement company for about 3000.00 of credit card bills?

I have no idea what your personal situation is, but if you can manage, try to pay on your own to the creditor instead of settling it. Let them know that you are interested in clearing the debt. They will offer some extensions with lower interest rates and waive off the late fees. Your credit will be hurt if the creditor reports your account as "Settled" to the bureaus. In case, if this is not the option, look into the ranking chart for the companies in your area.

you are not going to find a settlement company that handle that small of debt. It is not worth their time. The minimum I have ever seen is 5000.00 Plus that hurts you credit and with only 3000.00 dollars in credit card debt it isn`t worth hurting your credit over that small amount of debt. I would just call the creditors and work something out.

Here's how I understand debt settlement to work-

If you go with a company:
You inform your creditors of your intentions
You start paying the settlement company
Once their fees have been paid, they start building a account to pay for your settlement offers
Your accounts go delinquent
Your accounts may be settled at some future time
If you do the above, then your credit would take a hit for each account that went 30-60-90+ days late, and settled accounts I believe do not look as good as paid in full accounts (although you might be able to negotiate a better entry on the credit report).

If you do it yourself, I don't think a creditor is usually willing to settle unless the account is delinquent.

Debt settlement is not a form of bankruptcy, it's probably the last of your options, short of filing BK.
