Hi -- I make a good income, but living in Las Vegas, I unfortunately became addicted to gambling! I'm on the road to recovery (one day at a time, 120 days clean) and I finally have the mental focus to start cleaning up my credit! I have 4 payday loans in town, 3 internet payday loans, a loan with cash call ($5000) and $20,000 in credit card debt. Mostly, I can't keep everything straight! I'd like to make a large financial commitment and get everything paid off in the next year. Who should I use? I hear so many scare stories out there...

I am sorry that you are going through such a difficult time. That is the reason why I don't gamble because I am afraid that the same kind of temptation can happen to me. Sometimes I wonder if some of those places are rigged to let you win and to entice you to come back and often.

But I am glad that you are getting help for that matter. There are lots of information regarding debt consolidation companies and plans on this message board. Browse around and read about each before you make a decision. Be forewarned that many of the debt consolidation companies charge a fee for such a service.

Since you have so much debt, you may want to consider bankruptcy. I hate to recommend bankruptcy but in your situation, debt consolidation may not be the best long term alternative. However, if you have registered with this website, someone will be contacting you with your options in terms of debt consolidation and repayment plans. You may also want to look into the Do It Yourself link on this message board.

Please let us know your progress.

Can you take out a consolidation loan at a local bank and pay everything off. I dealt with my mortgage adviser last year who informed me that debt consolidation is just as bad as bankruptcy, I chose not to do it. He said it would be better to get a regular loan and pay off the creditors then the smaller loan payment would be more affordable and build my credit score. Hope this helps.
