Late posting of the debt in credit report
Date: Mon, 03/19/2007 - 15:02
I acquired debt to a community college in June 2003, the account went into collections with our state Collection unit and paid in December 2003. However, the account didn't appear on my credit report until March 2005. I didn't notice until I became a victom of fraud in June 2005, is it legal for a company to do this? I have disputed it with the two reporting agencies it reoprts with, thus far they advised me to contact the creditor itself, however I did and they just keep blowing me off. Is there a law that gives them a timeframe to report?

Creditor must report your account to the bureaus with the actual status. If they don't, they are violating the FCRA laws by causing defamation and financial injury. If you have the payment receipt and still they don't report it, you have a legal case against them under Section 623 of the FCRA

I do not believe they are required to post the initial entry in a timely manner. Once reported, all information on it must be accurate (meaning the date that they show last activity for should be Dec. '03).
