If after auditing my records with the credit card companies you don't find any errors, what happens? Does this trash my credit rating?

You've heard the saying "If it sounds too good to be true..." There are mixed reviews on Hess Kennedy, and I won't diss them because I haven't actually dealt with them.

I'm guessing Hess is auditing your files, and told you they would send all sorts of notices your creditors to make sure they comply with all the laws. It is very unlikely your credit card will agree to a 55% settlement. In the odd chance they do, they will undoubtedly put a comment on your credit file that says the account was settled for less than full balance. That comment will lower the credit score.
