I am interested in finding out how long a debt can stay on your credit file. I went through a divorce 12 years ago and my husband didn't pay any of the debt. He moved to Texas and even avoided his child support. I have three credit cards listed on my credit report from over seven years ago that he didn't pay. When do they get removed or do they?

Do you know when the account first turned into default?

The negative items stay on the report for seven years from the date of first delinquency? If you are sure that the negative items are past the seven years period from the original date of delinquency, dispute it with the credit bureau. They will verify it with the data furnishers and correct the errors.
