I have a credit score of 542 and would like to know what to do to improve my credit status.

Take a look at all the points mentioned in the link below. It has some great tips on credit repair.

Like Cajun said, make your first step by pulling the latest copies from all the bureaus and go through each account carefully. You need to call the lenders who have reported a negative balance in your file and work out payment arrangements. In case you need a counselor to assist in negotiating with the creditors, wait for someone referred by this website. He will discuss your options and work out easy repayment plans and offer the lowest interest rate. Once your accounts get paid off, creditors will report your payments to the bureaus and your credit scores will start going higher.
