Hi,

My husband and I just had court on Friday to file for bankruptcy. We were declared with no assets and are now just waiting for it to be officially dismissed.
We are currently renting a nice apartment, but were hoping to own a condo next Summer. I see now that it is probably not realistic?

I have looked into ways of trying to rebuild credit, and one of the things is to get a secured credit card. How do you get a credit card after a bankruptcy? The only ones we get "pre-approved" for are the ones that cost $200 just to get the card, and we are definitely not going that route. We have done somewhat ok just paying cash for things for the past year, and I am not going to beg for a credit card.

I am 23 and I have a 13 month old son. I want to give him the best life possible. We are currently doing so, but my expectations for life are extreme wealth and him having all the nicer things in life. I want to get on the road to that - and FAST!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My brother is a mortgage lender and he said we will need to wait atleast a year before applying for a mortgage loan.

It is aggravating because people can make mistakes, why is it so hard to make those mistakes in the past? I am a loving wife and mother with goals, and past mistakes are holding me back from giving my family the best life possible.
I am sad about all this and I can't wait to move forward.

Hi denap

Welcome on the board. As bankruptcy has been declared on your credit file, it will stay for at least 10 years.

You can start re-establishing your credit by doing the following things:

  • You should contact your banker and let him know of your desire that you want to rebuild your credit rating.

  • You can open one savings account.

  • One of the very important factors is to save money. Be regular and persistent saver. You can save by following these simple techniques:

[list=1]
  • You should pay yourself first.

  • When you take your next raise, save it.

  • Always try to save 5% of your total pay.

  • You can open a different savings account and deposit your savings there.

  • You can opt to take a small loan using your savings account as collateral, and then pay it back.

  • Apply for a credit card with a low limit and your savings accounts can be used as a security for this purpose.

  • And make sure that you keep making regular payments to your credit card balances.

Denap! Some condos offer Section 8/bankruptcy housing for cheaper than normal condos. The condos are very nice and always in a safe neighborhood. Just because you went bankrupt does not mean you are not entitled to nice housing. Check your state website for more info on this.
I looked into it when I was evicted and found some great housing opportunities to fit my situation!
