As I don't know the specifics of your situation, my first off the cuff answer would be to wait and see if they drop off your friend's credit report the way they should. Then, if that doesn't happen, write a letter. Again, this is just my uninformed opinion. Someone else on here will no doubt be able to give you a better answer very shortly.

You don't need to write letters because the negative information will automatically be removed from the file once the reporting time is over. If this doesn't happen, write letters to the bureaus highlighting the item and get it removed.
If you contact the creditors now, it will be like opening up new can of worms and they will push some collector to recover the debt. You have nothing to worry because the debt is already past the SOL. If I were in your place, I will wait for the item to be removed automatically.
