They have not prove that you owe the alleged debt. It doesn't really matter anyway, because the statute of limitations has run (long ago, Michigan is 6 years). I would send them a letter (registered RR) and tell them that the SOL has run on any alleged debt that old in Michigan, and to cease any and all contact. They are trying to rip you off, hoping you'll make some payment, and thus bring the debt back into the SOL.

Don't pay them a dime, lawstudent is right, these companies drag old debt out and then try to collect on it. We have one right now that is over 20 years old that one is trying to collect on, I just sent them a cease and desist and a SOL letter, I refuse to pay them a dime.

For some reason more and more of these very old debts from 1990 to 1998 or so are turning up. Those debt buyers must be getting desperate. They probably pay less than a penny on the dollar for those.

We have one that is over 20 years old, actually it is so old we don't even know what it is for. I just got the signature card from my certified letter to them today. Hopefully they will go away and stay away.
