In 1997 I had a home phone line (Verizon) which was in my brothers name (with his permission of course). I moved out in 1999 and had the phone disconncted leaving debt of $150 which I neglected to pay so of course it went into collections and I did not pay. I am not sure if the delinquent amount went on his credit from Verizon but as of today there is nothing on my brothers credit report from Verizon or any other collection agency saying he owes this amount. So today he receives a letter from a collection agency and he calls them and they state its an account from 199 and they told him he needs to pay this amount immediatley which is now for $300...So my question is since the debt never was paid is he still responsible to pay this amount even if its been 8 years from since the phone service was turned off? Or is it still possible for the collection agency to report this to his credit report?

The debt is out of statute for reporting and probably for legal action unless you are in one of the states with a long sol. Send them a debt validation letter certified return receipt. In letter mention to them that the debt is sol. They can legally collect on it just cannot use court action or report to credit bureaus.

I have been contacted by a collection agency about a 21 year old debt that they say I owe, I have spoken with the representative twice and have yet to receive anything in the mail confirming the debt. Is this a scam ? What do I do ?

A debt that is 21 years old????? Good grief. USUALLY..............if you start payments aain, your SOL, on the debt starts over again. I've had a CA contact me about an old debt, too. ...about 10 years old. The item isn't even on my credit anymore. Did you check your CR, GUNNELL, to see if it's still on there? If it's been THAT long, I doubt it is.
