Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for advise on how to handle a default judgement. I had been in what seemed like a hopeless situation of $70-$80 per month overlimit and late fees. I would pay on time and next month and there was still a late fee because "the date you paid was in the next billing period". With things obviously not working I basically abandoned my credit and struggled to pay tuition and go to college. I graduate with my 2 yr degree next week and want to take care of the old debts. I have a default judgement which I was never served for. It's for 3 times the amount I originally owed. The other debts are all up there too but I'm hoping to be able to negotiate them since there's no judgement. I absolutely intend to pay these debts and penalties are definately in order, but the amount of the penalties is crushing. The new balances leave me in the same position I was in. What would be the best way to approach getting the judgement reduced to an amount closer to the original balance? By the way I live in NY. Thank you for any help.

If you weren't properly served, I'm thinking you'd need to obtain a copy of the proof of service and check for erroneous info. If you can show that the proof of service was faked, then you might be able to have the judgement vacated.

Other than that, I don't think you could really affect the judgement much. I'm guessing that attorney and court fees were added to your balance due, inflating the total amount.
