First of all, no creditor or collection company can legally place a bad mark on your credit report without first validating the debt in which they say you owe. If you find any negative remarks in your credit report, which you have never been notified of, then file a dispute with the credit bureaus. If you come to my site, I have "letters for all collection needs" on the side of the screen. Click that link, and there are letters to clean up your report. Hope it helps, let me know.

Any ca you pay will report as a paid collection which will be bad for your report.First see if you can contact original creditor and work out a way to pay them.If this is not fesible,do as Anthony suggested. Demand validation of the debt and if they can prove it is your debt then you can start working on a settlement agreement with them.Just ensure any settlement agreements force them to remove all negative entries from your report.Just an FYI here, but recent lates can destroy a score so you getting that increase is normal.
