Not sure where to turn or what to do.

My husband and I are in $20,000 of debt that we are having a great problem paying. This is spread over several credit cards. Several are in collections. Several have offered a settlement but want the payment in full...which is out of the question. Except one...but should I pay that if I go decide to go with a debt settlement company? We are a house payment behind. Our car will be paid off next month. We are struggling to make it without the debt..which is how the debt became such an issue. Anyway...I don't know what to do. I don't know if I sould seek the help of a debt settlment company or try first on my own. I am unsure how to try on my own. I have contacted several of my creditors in the past but never got a response. We did set up a payment plan with one card but it didn't seem to make a dent in what we owe. They said the payments were interest free and all that but after a year of paying on it the balance doesn't seem to have changed. We are confused, frustrated and inexperienced with this type of thing. We don't know what steps we need to take first. Keep in mind....our cards are in collections. One has not been paid on in almost two years! We really need help.

Before you sign with any company, please do some research and make sure you get some others experiences. There are quite a few companies out there that promise the world and leave you further in debt.

Thanks all! That is very kind. I haven't heard from anyone yet...but then again...I do screen my calls. lol. Maybe I will call that number on the site myself. Thanks!

I have lurked around today and feel encouraged. I am gaining the energy to face this head on. The only problem, I feel that way for a bit and then retreat. Oh well...years will go by...I can either stay in my junky position or be on my way to freedom. I choose freedom. I just need a roadmap.

Good choice! There is a ton of info on this site, and if it doesn't have the answers to your questions or your exact need, just post and someone will come along that is knowledgeable in that area!
