IDT Carmel Inc wrongly bugging me for a closed old account
Date: Tue, 05/22/2007 - 00:57
Well after my jaw came off the floor I asked why. She asked if I ever had a US Bank Checking account. I told her yes, and that I had closed the account in early 2003. She stated that for some reason (she did not know why) I owed them (US Bank) $655.78 and IDT Carmel Inc 165.83 in additional fees "How would you like to pay that today?"
I then told her that I CLOSED my account and in the 4 and a half years since I CLOSED the account, opened (and still maintain) two checking accounts. I asked how was it possible I owed a bank that much money and I was still allowed to open a checking account. She said she was not certain... "How would you like to pay?" The conversasion ended with me telling her I would dispute the matter and she asked if I wanted thier mailing address. I told her no I would just dispute with the credit agencies and she told me if I didn't send them a letter the calls would continue. I told her I didn't mind if the calls continued, because I wanted to keep them in the loop.
I opened the account in Tennessee while I was a student maintaining Georgia Residency and closed it after a few months BECAUSE US BANK IS THE WORST BANK I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH! (I did say a few choice things while I was closing my account maybe this is revenge?)
Anyway, what do I do? I am currently in the application process for a government job which requires security clearance and if I show a "Willfull disregaurd for paying financial obligations" I can kiss it goodbye. I have run all three credit reports and this does not show up anywhere on any of them.
Please help (Sorry for the long post but I thought more information was better than less)
Thanks!
PS> Sorry for the spelling and grammer

Send debt validation letter to IDT Carmel
I'd send two letters to IDT Carmel Inc. A debt validation letter, and a letter restricting communications from them to letter form only (it helps cut a lot of crap). I'd also try contacting US Bank to try to obtain more information about your supposed debt.

It would be pretty easy if US Bank did not or does not report to chex systems.
Worried about IDT Carmel
Thanks for the quick reply... I am worried that if I send IDT Carmel anything or make waves it will instantly show up on my credit report.
It has been over 4 years and there is nothing on there from US Bank or the IDT place.
I guess my real question is could this be fraud? And, if it hasn't shown up yet why?
I am sure these are just this simplest questions in the world to answer (but any info will help)
Thanks
IDT Carmel Inc - dispute
First, you have the legal right to dispute IDT Carmel. If you notify them in writing that you dispute the debt and demand validation, they are not allowed to continue any collection efforts until they provide it. Look in the fdcpa, section 809, subsection B for that, just so you know where to find it if you need it. In my opinion, reporting this debt to the credit bureau before it is validated is wrong, so if they do it, I would press them to remove the entry from your file.
Could IDT Carmel Inc be fraud? Yes. But it could be many things--it could be a legit account that you dont remember. It could be someone else's account with a name similar to yours. It could be an honest mistake just as easily as it could be fraud. Whatever it is, if you demand a proper validation as set forth in the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act, it should help clear things up for you. That is, as long as that CA provides the validation. If they dont, you have legal grounds to take action against them.
Keep us updated--send them a validation letter by certified mail RRR. Let us know how it goes
IDT Carmel
I used to work for them. Your debt is valid and you should pay it. Work it out with IDT Carmel Inc and they can cut you a deal so it doesn't ruin your credit. Depending on what state you live in, your debt is valid for up to 10 years. Look up fdcpa - Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

how about "could be valid"....and this post is from May 07
IDT Carmel avoid them by closing a/c
If your former bank failed to close your account properly and any fees were assessed (monthly fees, etc.) they will have to be reversed due to bank error. As long as you had closed your account at a zero balance and you had no outstanding items pending on your account you cannot be held responsible by IDT Carmel for any charges that may have occurred.
IDT Carmel - former collector
Please ignore "former collector", IDT Carmel inc, he does not know who you are let alone have access to an account you allegedly have with this agency in question.
From time to time (more frequent as of late) we have people come to this forum to troll/flame/stir trouble for some unknown reason. Just ignore them, my advice at this point would be to contact your former bank to inquire upon this. That may be the best way to determine if the account even went negative in the first place.
If it did overdraw then find out why, request them to review previous statements from the date of closure request and go from there.

IDT Carmel - old debt
I have a old debt with IDT-Carmel Inc/North American Collectors, Inc. I was recently contacted about this debt. NACI contated me on behalf of IDT-Carmel wanting payment on a car that was repossed in 2000. The originl account was through National City Bank in which the account was opened in 1998. My question is what are my legal rights to dispute the amount the collection agency is wanting. I do not have $10,125.54 in which they want. I did talk to the colleciton agency to try and set up payment. I asked questions on how much was owed on car before repoed, how much did the car sell for ect. I would appreicate any helpful advice on what I should do. Sincerely needing advice

letter debt validation - IDT Carmel INC.
I have one question, I don't want to sound as if I'am stupid, but what does a debt validation letter to IDT Carmel consist of. I have never had to deal with a debt validation letter before. Is it writing a letter requesting information on the car. Sincerely needing advice p.s. thank you for the quick response
See JC's post above, he gives you a sample "validation letter".

IDT Carmel - DV letter should have all information
Validation from IDT Carmel INC is getting all the needed details of the debt in question. You want to see the things you mentioned before, what was the original amount owed, what fees and or interest were added and are they legal in your state, who owns the account with proof, anything you signed showing your obligation to this debt.
If they can't provide these things, then they can't continue to collect.

IDT Carmel - I spoke with them
I have a question about an uathorized withdrawl from my account. I owed old Credi card debt of $648.50 It was stupid of me but I gave the rep my checking account info over the phone and they deducted that money. But on top of that authorized withdrawl they made an UNAUTHORIZED withdrawl of $742.50. So my account was overdrawn over $900 because of overdraft charges. I spoke with IDT Carmel Inc they said they are working on getting me my mondy back. But it isn't fast enough I have been living with no money for 3 days now. Is there anything I can do about the unauthorized withdrawl??? any suggestions

idt carmel
it is most likely you were deficient on funds in order for the account to be properly closed and the bank lost contact with you in order to tell you, which is when you moved. what probably happened is they sold it on to the collection agency who tracked you down, by which time penalties and interest raked it up to the current amount. IDT Carmel seem to be a legit outfit, check en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDT_Carmel
IDT Carmel
I was told that my collection account(listed with a different collection company) was sold to IDT Carmel. I cannot find a number to reach this company so that I can see about clearing up my credit. Does anyone have the number for the company.

Debt Validation Letters & IDT
I found this post because of my own pains with this company. I did ask over the phone for a debt validation and they only sent me an email with an attached letter stating the balance and interest rate they were charging. I used your form letter (which was helpful so they would stop calling at work) but will they actually follow it? Do they have to? I sent it via email, fax and just got back from sending it via certified mail as well.
Once you send them a written request to not contact you by phone
Once you send them a written request to not contact you by phone then they have to by law, with the same request for validation they must (by law) cease collection activity until such documentation is provided. If they violate the contact request then you may file civil suit for $1,000 per violation.

Your quick response was a relief thank you.
I know they are "supposed" to follow it but I guess I read a lot of companies seem to not follow what they are supposed to do. It is very easy for me to document their calls to me because the number they have is my cell phone.
He did call me this afternoon but had not received the fax or email yet. I explained that I would not be making payment arrangements and that I had sent a fax and email and a letter explaining I wanted a full validation of the debt and for them to cease communication except via USPS mail. He put me on hold (I guess to head to the fax machine) and then started going on how he had helped me out and what was I going to do when I got the paperwork anyway.
I simply said I would make that determination once I received full validation of the debt. (had to talk over him rambling on about how I was refusing to pay and how he would have to refer this to another department) and I told him I look forward to receving the letter and to have a nice day and hung while he was still ranting at me.
I don't mind clearing up legitimate fees on a valid debt but the amounts don't match up and this seems very shady to me. Thank you for your support.

while this is true, we always suggest sending letters by certified mail for this purpose, because it then becomes a matter of your word against theirs. Too many of us have had issues with debt collectors that completely ignore what you tell them on the phone, so sending the letter at least provides proof that they have been duly notified to stop calling you at work. It's more a CYA thing than anything else.

Question:
Im trying to re-train my daughter (could have been a real bad idea but,...) Since Dec of 07 shes into me over 10 thousand in trying to help pay off her extremely bad debts.
In doing so I've been going by the 3 credit reports, paying as collection letters are received, checking the reports, and sending the checks.
Question.... she has ONE so far from IDT Carmel Inc for a small amt (but may snowball since there may be a big one following I fear) which does not appear or can be identified in the reports, do I assume the company and debt is being truthful, or do I take the chance and fight it by sending the Debit Validation letter, maybe leading to more trouble? She's already talked to an extremely intimidating rep from IDT via phone.
The amt is originally 230.00 and settlement 161.00
I know this seems to be trivial, but remember I've already dished out a fortune already.

Welcome to the community gobrach.
It is your legal right to request validation if you fee that any portion or all of the debt seems questionable. If they have the legal right/entitlement to collect on the account they should be able to provide the necessary information to you when you request validation. Do you already have a validation letter ready or would you like a template?

Just responding to the last post, I have had pretty decent luck with U.S. Bank. They have been my main bank for the past 10 years. Prior to that I was with Firststar for 5 years. Firststar was bought out by U.S. Bank so I kind of picked them up by default. My credit is decent though and my finances are fairly solid so I don't know how U.S. Bank is if you get into credit trouble.

I just saw another post talking about U.S. National Bank which is different than U.S. Bank. I have had no dealings with U.S. National Bank which might be the bank that the guest was talking about. I don't know if they are good or bad.
Thoroughly Rediculous!
I got served papers. Not a phone call. Not a letter. Nothing in over 7 years. My account was held during a divorce where the ex ran up bad checks weeks prior to the divorce to get things like cigarettes. After over 7 years they want about a grand from the old check fees related to the account. There are no outstanding checks from the old account. This is just a collection of the $20 bad check fees and I do remember it from over 7 years ago because I had held on to the account information for a few years in case the ex wanted to stir anything up. Was it not that important to them at US Bank over 7 years ago to do anything about this supposed debt from check fees? Believe me, US Bank and any bank that wants to wait over 7 years to collect check fees ought to just drop it if there are no outstanding checks on that sort of thing. Utterly insane.

IDT Carmel
we have never heard of this supposed company, and have NEVER been contacted by this company -- EVER!!
our credit union calls today and says that IDT Carmel put a lein on our bank account and all the money that was in our account is seized.
So we got the number of this company and the guy says "well you were served in April 08 to go to court". We told him we were never contacted by anyone let alone given a court notice! He said well you were sent a letter in the mail demanding payment.
We told him we had never heard of IDT carmel let alone received a dunning letter from them and the guy got rude and said well you heard from us now, you owe us $12,000 on a debt from 1992 that we purchased from a bank in Jackson, MI that closed it's doors!
I said 1992? That account was closed when the bank closed and it's NEVER been on our credit record -- EVER! How in the world can you claim and subsequently seize our account if you never notified us! And WHY would it take 16 years!!!
IDT apparently bought the account in 2005 (according to this idiot) -- but still we had no idea that there was even a problem!
I am sure the statute of limitations was up a LONG time ago... and now they have seized our whole bank account --

Stunned, Contact the clerk of the court at once to see when and where you were served! If you weren't served properly, you can have the judgement overturned. Ask the court to release your bank account. If they file suit against you again, bring up the SOL and also ask for validation of the debt during discovery, they won't be able to provide it and the case will be dismissed. Once you acoount has been unfrozen, change to another account.

IDT??? US BANK??
My husband recently recieved a collectio letter from a debt collector Leading Edge Recovery Solutions requesting payment for a large past due balance from US Bank from 2004. We contacted US Bank right away and they do not have any record of us (obviously). So my husband called the Leading Edge back and he was told that this account was given to them by IDT CARMEL. When we asked for contact information for IDT Carmel we were told they could not give us any information. We feel trapped... What can we do? Is this how people get money and ruin hard working people's credit? If anyone has any advise please help us!
Thank you!

you send a DV and C&D letter to the address contained in the letter from leading edge.send it certified mail return receipt.while you send that have US BANK send you a letter stating that no such account exists.you will have this bottomfeeder by the short ones.do not give them a dime.
how to deal with this....
I work for IDT carmel. It is not a regular collection agency. It is a 3rd party collections and debt buying company (look it up for better info). I know there are collectors that are rude and that attack with force... but there are us here that would rather not beat someone up. Im not sure how long ago your account was with us but it's possibly moved out if there has been no payments in some time. Usually the bank fees by the way are overdraft or one simple fee that the bank had some fine print on that they can give you fees of some kind over whatever little issue there was. US bank is aweful. I hear this on a daily basis (as well as HSBC). The best thing you can do for your credit is to pay the whole thing off. The best thing for you pocket book and credit is to settle the account. We can usually get an agreement as low as 65% of the bill. (It does depend on a person to person basis. Not everyone qualifies the same as others.) If you decide to settle, there is a way to get it off you CBR (credit report) is to settle then make sure you call us until you have a letter in your hands showing you have paid your debt and are no longer obligated for the rest.... then take that letter and write a dispute saying this is already paid. Send that dispute as well as a copy of your letter from IDT into all 3 Credit Burous. They then contact USBank and see if they want to keep this on the CBR. 95% of the time a creditor will NOT keep it on due to already have gotten their money. Hope this helps some.
Oh, and its pretty easy these days to get an account with a bad one still out there... but it will make bigger purchases harder like cars and homes and loans. Dont let your credit go. Its never beyond help and we need people to pay their debts to help this economy.

I have troube w/ IDT
I have also had some trouble with IDT. When I was just out of high school, I opened an account with Gorden's jewelers. It came to bite me in my butt. The amount owed went to a debt collection agency(IDT) and I found out about it when I went to go get a loan for some furniture. I talked to them and they cut me a deal and I only had to pay half the amount. I paid them two months ago and they were suppose to send me a letter so i can show it to the person i was trying to get the loan from. The first time it was the wrong address and the second time i gave them the correct one and i still have not gotten it. Later they said they could fax and that was a week ago. I talked to a manager named tim and he told me it would be here today be noon. Please help. I need to know who i sould go to.
