Drowning in Payday loans, need a life jacket!
Date: Tue, 05/22/2007 - 08:59
Over the past year I have been signing up for various payday loans, because at the time I believed they were the only 'quick fix' option i had. I was too embarassed to ask friends or family to help me out with my electric and phone bills I had gotten behind on, not to mention rent and I even just needed $ to get by on an everday basis. I have taken out 6-7 loans over the past few months and haven't been able to pay a single one off...I am probably debited atleast 350 a week from the companies a week. I have gotten into a major hole and finally broke down and confessed to my dad. My dad, after reiterating how terrible those PDL places screw you over and what a dumb idea it was (like I havent been kicking myself for the past year!) suggested I close my current bank account IMMEDIATELY so no more debits can go thru. I will have to do this or there's no way I will be able to pay my rent much less have money to survive on.Ive asked my accounting dept. to give me a physical check instead of direct deposit, and I'm going to open a new account. Would this be the best avenue to take? I live in Florida, what can I expect once I have closed my account and the loans start defaulting? How much more will they ruin my credit? Also, should I switch my account to deposits only, instead of all together closing it?
Thanks everyone for any replies!

Yes, close the account!
It won't really ruin your credit at all, since most pdl's don't report to the major credit agencies. They report to Teletrack, which will only prevent you from taking out more payday loans. Terrible, huh?
I would just close the account, but ask your bank what their policy is about ach transactions going through on closed accounts. Some banks will force open the closed account and allow the transactions to go through. If your bank does this, yes, have them put it on deposit only before they close it. That way it can't be forced open.
Also, do a search here for the company names you are dealing with. That will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from them once you defualt.

Thank you Leah & Goudah. I did have a few more questions but they're not coming to me at the moment. But that helped :)
That would be great. I'll try to post that later on today.

And when you remember the questions - Be sure to post them! I know there are a few Florida users here, Frogpatch is one, that have also dealt with pdl's and may have some good Florida specific advice for you!

Thanks Bublefan. I am trying to get all of the companies together and I'll post them later. I also just looked over my bank statement and noticed two debits for $45 and the only company ID it had on there was ROVINGE. I'm almost positive I've never taken out a loan with any company called ROVINGE.

They are all internet loans.
Here are some of the company names I know of right off the bat that I have loans with -
Cash Transfer Centers (took loan out about 2 weeks ago for $600, they are scheduled to debit my account this Friday for $765 I believe)
Geneva Roth (I just took out a loan last Friday with them for $300, they are scheduled to begin debiting my account next Friday)
GFSIL - Not sure how much I took out with them, am researching and will post later)
Pay Day OK - Took out loan on 11/29/06 for $500, as of today have paid $710 and my account shows i still owe $300.
United Cash Loans - When I go to their website and click on "view my documents", all it says is "sorry, legal documents not available at this time" and then it says I owe $105 and my account is 'open' .
I will post more later (currently at work!)

I need help also. I am in Texas and found this site a few weekss ago. I had 8 Payday Loans. I sent them all letters and 4 of them have marked my account Paid In Full. I am still waiting to hear back from the others but I did just hear back from SGQ Processing. This is AJ's reply to my email.
"the loan you agreed to is based on the lending laws from where our company originates, and not the state you live in. Please provide a fax number and we will send a copy of your agreement."
I thought the company has to abide by the laws in my state??? What should I say when i email him back???
The original ammount on this loan was $300 and I have paid $720 so far. Also, I am in Texas.
Thank you all. You have been great help so far. Just keep it Coming. HaHa!

Most of these places are going to tell you that they do not have to abide by your states law because they are not in your state or doing business in your state. That is not right. If you have been contacted by this company, they gave you a loan, taking the money out of your account, etc, they are doing business in your state.
Stand your ground, when you send them another letter, include your state law and stand your ground. If they are not following the law, report them to your AG, BBB or whomever else you can report them to. Don't let them give you a line of whooy.

Who do I report them to ? I'm pretty sure I my loan was only for $200-300, I have been unable to find a website for them, do they have one? I did have a payment that has already been returned & they have already begun calling my work and cell phone. I know they will start harassing full time once they learn I have closed my account (tomorrow). But I have been paying them for quite some time now and am almost positive ive paid them far beyond what my loan was for.

Thank you Leah and 2nband (BTW - Love the pic of Tim!) I included the Texas law about PDL's in the email I sent them, and told them I have lodged a verbal complaint with the Attorney General and he still sent that letter. Does anyone know what I should have them? I get so confused when trying to figure it out.

No AJ, According to the Texas Attorney General????????s office since I reside in Texas you have to follow the Texas Payday Loan Laws and you have to be licensed in Texas to do business with me. Which by the way they are not showing that SGQ is licensed in Texas so you in violation and I will be filing a complaint with them.

You can file complaints with your AG's office and dept of bankin
You can file complaints with your AG's office and dept of banking . . . . And write them letters requesting that your loans be marked paid in full (assuming you've paid what you legally owe).
Bublefan has had some very recent success in Florida, so I would do anything she recommends to.

Thank you - One other question that comes to mind - I have a loan with Cash Transfer Centers ($600, they will be attempting to debit $765 from my account on Friday) and Geneva Roth Corp. (for $300). I have not paid anything on these loans yet.
I do intend to pay them off what I legally owe, but Im closing my checking account in order to stop the actions of the 'companies' I have already paid off (see first post). Has anyone worked with CTC or Geneva Roth Corp? I'm wondering what the procedure will be in order to pay them off and find out what I legally owe them.

Both are the worst. You need to IMMEDIATELY send a Voluntary Wage Revocation Letter to CTC and your payroll department. Because CTC will attempt to garnish your paycheck for the full amount.

I had a loan with GFSIL too and I ended up paying over $1000 for a $200 loan. They are intimidating and will continue to take money from your account. They will even try under different names. Close your accont as soon as possible.
As far as Payday Ok, I had a loan with Payday Select (which is the same company) I paid them over 1200.00 on a $500.00 loan. I sent them a letter stating the laws of Florida and they marked me PIF and are sending me a refund.

Thanks Steelers1 - A few months ago I had a loan out with CTC before which I thought was going to be returned to them for NSF. On my 'due date' I 'chatted' with a 'representative' online and asked them what would happen if it came back NSF, they said it would be turned over to their collections department. Well, it went thru, overdrew my account but it was not returned to them. So I was able to take out another loan (yes, big mistake).
Will they attempt to garnish right away? I can probably have them paid off within a month.
I thought attempting to garnish wages was illegal in FL from a PDL? I could be mistaken..Ive tried to soak in a lot of this helpful info today but in between trying to look busy @ work and getting help with this PDL mess, its a bit overwhelming!

destinysjenny here, under a different login name. I'm trying to calculate my loans and I see that I took out a loan with GFS on 4/10 for $200. They have been debiting me every 2 weeks, but so has GFSIL. I have no record that I ever received a loan from GFSIL. Are GFS and GFSIL the same company??

I beleive they are, but you can ask your bank if there is a phone number associated with the debit. There usually is. You can call them and get more information.
If the two companies are the same and have both been debiting every two weeks, you need to dispute the charges with your bank asap. They may be able to recover some of the funds for you. And going through the bank is a whole lot easier then trying to get a pdl to return your money! With GFSIL I'd say it would be downright impossible to get your money back!

Thanks. GFS has already begun to call me here at work today for a payment of $40 that was returned last week. I do not want to speak to them just yet b/c I'm not exactly sure what to say, I'm still doing some reearch as to if GFS/GFSIL are the same company, b/c if they are, I have paid off my loan & then some.
Is there anything I can say to have them stop calling me at work? I have coworkers sitting around me and would really prefer not to have them harassing me at work.

You can send them a letter telling them not to contact you at work. But odds are they will not comply with it. I would just tell them each time they call that you can't get calls at work, then hang up. Or just hang up at the start. They call and harass you at work to try and embarrass you into paying. It can be hard to get them to stop.

Sneaky snakes. My loan with them was for 200 taken out on 4/10. I have calculated that i have paid a total of $215 all together. What can I say if I call them/ write them in order for them to deem the account PIF? - Jenny

I could only find 3 posts on the company ROVINGE but found a VERY helpful post from LEAH commenting that a company (I think Route 66) also does business under the name Rovinge and they are also GFSIL! I have 2 debits from ROVINGE on Friday the 18th, for $45 each.
I am on my way to close out my bank account right now. Does anyone have any advice on the action I should take against GFS/GFSIL/ROVINGE? Should I call and ask them why they are debiting my account under the name Rovinge? Ive already overpaid on the loan.
Thanks
Payday loan blues
I have really had it I kept money in my account to pay off the loan and they never took it then I check my account today and they took $90.00 and when I finally found a number that I dug for they said that they automatically renewed the account. I thought they were just going to take out the money I borrowed plus the huge fee for borrowing it. Now as it stands I have to call the company 3 days before my payday to let them know to take out the whole amount. What a pain. This is going to put me in the poor house. The loan company was Ameriloan. Then I had to take another one out to cover the money they are I guess they are going to continue to take out. This has just started and I need help to figure out how to fix it.
