If you are extremely concerned about your score, I would watch it for 30-60 days after your accounts are paid off (assuming you are paying at least one of them in full), and if you don't see an improvement in your score, or see it reflected on your report, then contact the creditor and request they report it as soon as possible.

but no one here has actually said 'yes' to their credit card's offer for monthly credit report / credit score access? surely someone in this forum has done this at some point and has a good idea of how long the delay following a large payoff?

I'm sure there are members here that keep that close of a watch on their credit score by paying for the monthly updates - I'm just not one of them.
Improving your credit score is a long-term project that will take time, and I'm not sure anyone here will be able to give you an exact length of time for the payment to be reflected and your score to go up. And I'm pretty sure the amount of time for reporting will vary from creditor to creditor. Your experience may vary greatly from someone else's, and you may not be able to count on the time frame given by any of us due to that fact.

Most creditors are on a monthly reporting cycle,so you should see changes within 30-45 days. This cycle is rarely ever changed.I monitor my reports on a 24 hour basis for changes. My scores have not changed in the last three months, but I do not have any negative info in it.I am just tweaking it for max score when I buy a home.

sue - I think you might be overestimating my knowledge background! I'm only beginning to learn about the whole credit thing and seriously - if everyone responded with "exactly 2 years" I would have just nodded my head and said 'ok, thanks!'. your post clarified for me that the credit score is more or less a constantly changing number.
.. and cajun just clarified for me that changes occur in a matter of a month or two, not 6.
thanks all I needed - thanks guys!

I was kind of curious about the time frame too. I am trying to make sure our credit is good enought hat we can refinance our home once the rate drops a little more.
I can't even say I know what my credit is like. I am getting a report now.
