2 years ago I moved to where I currently live for a new job. I had a nice two bedroom apartment and no credit cards (did have debts though).
So about 6 months into living in my place I started to get sick -all the time!! It was very frustrating. My doctor and I were going over everything trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I was lethargic, struggling with depression, tired all the time, having asthma attacks every day and had constant headaches.
Then one day I noticed something that I hadn't before - MOLD in my apartment. So I report it to the complex, they come and tell me there is no mold (I am now in my 2 year lease). I talk with them again and again they state there is no mold. I tell them I am constantly sick and my doctor and I feel it's due to exposure to mold but again they say there is no mold.
While dealing with this and just struggling to get up and go to work in the morning I just "forgot" about everything else. I had gotten 3 credit cards to pay off an outstanding debt but didn't once I got them, I wasn't paying on my student loan, and I was constantly making late payments for utilitites and so forth and I just didn't care - I was to tired to care to be honest.
Finally my lease is coming up but low and behold I can't move anywhere because my credit sucks and the apartment complex I was in said I had a poor rental history (A new agency purchased the complex and changed the due date without letting anyone know so everything is late). So I had to stay but they didn't have any problem letting me move into a different apartment (that was when I found out that the due date that I knew as the 5th had been changed to the 1st!! - when I read my new rental contract). So I moved into a smaller and cheaper apartment (I fell and injured myself the day before I moved and was placed on 3 weeks of bed rest so I had to hire a cleaning lady to clean my old apartment - she came up to where I was and said that she couldn't clean the mold because is was coming up through the paint and she didn't have anyway of cleaning that off) and after about a week it was a whole new me (so to speak)
I had more energy than I had had in a long time, I wasn't gettinig headaches any more, I felt like I could do things and then I began to realize that I had made a mess, a big one.
So I talked to the student loan people - by this time my loan had gone into default but I was put on a program that if I pay consistanly for one year (I also set up automatic payments) then the default is removed and I go back to the original lender - I think this is a good thing?? Anyway, been looking at this site and am sending out validation letters to everyone - because there are some I feel I have a legal let to dispute I think.. Anyway I am glad to have found this site and think it will come in use as I put my self back together again.

I am sorry to hear about your health problems. Please do take care of yourself.

Is there any association in your area to whom you can report this apartment dispute? I am not sure if you will be able to afford an attorney to fix this problem. Look for the free legal aids in your place who deal with such issues.

For your student loans, keep in touch with the original lender and apply for forbearance. You might be able to set up a lower repayment plan with them.

You really should contact an attorney. Since you brought this mold to the owners attention and they did nothing to fix it, you could be entitled to part of the rent you paid . . . . Look up a lawyer that deals in landlord/tenant laws in your area and see if they give a free consulation. Some lawyers will take the case on a contingency basis, meaning they get a percentage of the award.

Yes, going through the rehabilitation program to get your student loans out of default is a good plan. After one year, the default will come off your credit report, and that will help your credit scores alot.

I am very sorry to hear about your health problems as well. I know mold can cause people multiple of health issues. Something that is very dangerous and lurks.

I'm so sorry about all you had to go through due to the mold in your apartment. My sister also has asthma and was in a similar situation. It's very frustrating when the owners deny that there's a problem.

It sounds like you're getting on track again. You will be fine. A year from now, as Steelers1 said, your credit report will be looking better. Good luck with everything!

Sorry to hear about all of the problems you have had. I hope things get better for you. I'm glad you got out of the apartment with the mold. My husband works for a restoration company and cleans up mold all of the time, and it can do serious damage to your health.
Hopefully now that you are feeling better, and living somewhere else you'll get things back on track again. Good luck!
