credit settled for less than actual

If I settle with a credit company for 20% less than my balance , does that impact my credit report.I have been told by credit card company that it hurts your credit score for two years

It depends how they report it to the credit reporting agency. If it's anything other than paid in full, it does affect your score but not nearly as bad as a default, writeoff or even a seriously late payment would.
