Ever since I was unemployed, I have fallen so far behind on my credit cards that I could not afford to pay them off. I tried to send a letter to two credit cards on the same company, American Express, explaining my situation and they did not care and decided to turn it to a credit bureau. This year, I have been able to pay some minimum due on my credit card, but once again I am falling behind because my husband does not have a steady job that pays him well enough that my check is not enough to pay for my credit cards. I would really like to be able to pay for my credit cards and pay them off so I can gain back my excellent credit that I used to have. I am tired of the collection calls that I keep receiving and how they keep blowing up my phone and want do something about it.

I have a friend who called some credit card companies and told them she was going to be claingin bankruptsy and they worked with her. Some she had to PIF, though it wasn't the full amount.
Maybe you could figure out a monthly payment to pay off what is already owed and see if they can close the account so no more charges to go it.
I would think consolidation would be your best bet.
I am sure someone else will have so ideas for you too.

Welcome to the Community :D I called my credit card companies and told them of my situation, and that I wanted to get them paid off, but because of interest, fees, etc., I couldn't, and could they drop the interest to let me catch up. All of them did, after I commited to a payment plan. I had to keep calling one of them a dozen times, until I got someone who would agree!! It's worth a try. You can also talk with the credit counselor for your free consultation to get more options, from which you are free to choose or not. Keep us posted..KAren

Moni, you should look for some professional help since you are unable to manage the repayments on your own. A debt consultant will get a lower plan with your creditors at lower interest rates. He will also try to waive off most of the fees so that you have affordable payments. An expert is already referred from this website after you filled up the counseling form. Take his advice and plan on your next move.
