Ok, I need some advice here. I have a past due internet/cable bill for $172 that if it isn't paid by 6/22 will be sent to a collection agency. I have switched services to a cheaper/better carrier, so this is my final bill from this company. Then I have a gas utility bill that is $536, but I just have to make a $190 payment this month on it. Then I have 2 credit cards that are overlimit, but only 1 which I am really concerned about because it has excessive fees, and I have to pay $477 to make it current again. With the gas bill, even if I don't pay the full $190, they won't do anything because I am still going to make a payment, so even though it is important, it's not going to affect my credit as much.

I guess my question is...should I just pay some of the internet bill and let it go to collections for the first since I've ever had this account in 4 years and concentrate on tackling my credit card which is late, or should I just make a small payment on the credit card, let it go late another month, and just make up the difference next month?

Whatever you decide to do, make sure that you explain your moves to the credit companies. After hearing from you, chances are they won't send your accounts to collections and you will be able to fix up an affordable plan with them. The good thing about this will be you won't have collections in your file. You should get something done with your creditors so that you don't see any derogatory remarks from the collection agencies.

Speak with a debt counselor for negotiating with your creditors on reducing the interest rates. They will be able to waive off most of the fees from your account.

Your best bet is to take care of your credit cards before the cable bill. A) the cable bill is going to be one set amount -- it isn't going to keep charging you late/overlimit fees. B) It is much easier to work with the credit cards themselves before they send it to a collection agency.

Get current on your credit cards then tackle the cable. If they say they are sending it to collections 6/22, then a collection agency might sent you a notice with the balance about the middle of July or even August. After the CA sends your notice, you have 30 days to respond to it. You're looking at about September before you would even need to pay the collection agency, and before they would report it to the credit bureaus.
