I could use some input. I have about $40,000 in credit card debt. My credit scores are excellent and I have not missed any payments yet. The problem is that I will soon be facing a major cut in my income (50%) and I know I won't be able to keep making the payments on these cards. Just the minimum payments have almost $1000 going out every month right now for these credit cards. I want to be pro-active and lower the monthly payments before anything goes delinquent. I contacted my credit card companies and they said they can't do anything to help. I don't have enough home equity for a loan and I have nothing else to secure a loan large enough for these credit cards. What can I do??? Any and all advice welcome!!!

Welcome to the Community :D I'm not sure, but perhaps if you called the companies and told them someone was offering lower interest, and because of your job situation, you were considering it, maybe they would help. They did a news report on our local news about this, and people called and told them this, and they got lower interest,it's worth a try. IF worse comes to worse, you may have to do a settlement arrangement with the cc companies. Unless you get a loan from a family or friend, I'm afraid that getting a loan for this will keep you in a viscious cycle, I'd try other options first, or maybe a second job temporarily. My husband did that for 5 years, and it really helped. Good Luck..KAren

Thanks for the reply Karen. Unfortunately that's exactly what I tried with my credit card companies...they said they couldn't help me and if I found lower interest somewhere else I should take it, but they couldn't offer it. I was considering doing settlement...but not sure what long term (or short term) effects that would have. I'm not so concerned about a viscious cycle, just reducing my monthly payments. I'm not using these credit cards anymore...just dragging around debt from many years ago. I just want the montly payments lower...I'm not horribly concerned about that increasing the time line of the debt right now. Anyway... a second job is not an option considering I have a 150 mile commute to work...unless I want to give up sleeping! :D Thanks again for your reply! I guess my only choice will be to start defaulting on the payments and hope my credit card companies are willing to do some negotiations at that point. :?

My sympathies to you--sounds like your days are already packed what with work and that commute! Some CC companies have programs to deal with sudden disability or being out of work--so I think calling and asking whether an income cut qualifies is definately worth a try for you. Good luck and let us know what happens!
