Collection Agency Nightmare

I sent in payment over 2 years ago to a collection agency to satisfy a debt. I never heard from them again after that. Then today I was checking my credit report and that same collection agency is stating that it was never paid. Evidently they never got the payment to begin with. But here is the problem. I shred all my money order receipts after a year and the money order receipt has been long gone. They keep telling me that they will keep this on my credit report until it is paid in full. Which is $158. This is stemming from an old medical bill from 2003. What should I do now?

Unfortunately, since you have destroyed the receipt, I don't know if you have anything else to prove about the payment done. Search the records again if you can find anything to fight this up. Next time when you pay off any account, don't forget to ask for the PIF letter and keep it in your folder. You never know how these unexpected things can happen all of a sudden!

Shredding the receipt did put you at a disadvantage, sorry--but the only other way I can think of to help you is to ask if you remember where you bought the money order. Money orders are all drawn off a bank, at the least the ones I have sent are. If you remember where you bought it, I would ask the merchant if they know what bank they deal with in issuing their money orders and then call that bank to see if they have a record of the creditor cashing it. Good luck and let us know what happens!

Since you have lost the receipt, the other way to get out of this mess in my opinion should be checking the SOL in your state. If the SOL has expired then your debt becomes "out of statute". However, SOL expiration does not influence the collection action or reporting of the delinquent account to the credit bureaus. But usually collection agencies are not that bothered with the out of statute debts.
