I'm not sure how old u are but same thing here. When i was growing up money was NEVER talked about to anyone!! Especially kids! Today times are different and we talk a LOT more about money and such with our kids...
What i've found that has worked really well with my children is, making them pay for things themselves. Showing them the value of a dollar. For instance, when each turned 16, (still 1 to go) we did buy them a used car but they had to find a part time job and pay for their own gas. Also, if they wanted a cell phone, which at the time wasn't such a necessity as it is today, they had to pay for 1/2 of the bill. These are just 2 small examples of some of what we did with our kids and i've been VERY lucky that none of them are terribly in debt! The 3 grown have NO credit cards and i tell them all the time, u actually DO need to get one to build ur credit but if u do, make SURE whatever u put on it, u can pay off at the end of the month!! Like somone once posted here, her grandpa told her "if u can't pay for it now, what makes u think u can pay for it later" NO truer words have ever been spoken! (sorry forgot who it was that said that)
Good Luck,
Ang

Well done Ang. You must be really proud of your children taking responsibilities. Everyone should understand the value of money. :D

Actually i AM very proud of my children and the young adults they've grown up to be! My oldest is married with 2 children and own their own home! Next is a senior in college and getting married in June of 08, also owns a home with her fiance and works part time (now she has some debt from school but only about 8,000) Not bad for a senior in college! My baby girl is 19, and still that, my baby girl! She's still in the nest and doesnt' seem too interested in going anywhere! (smart girl) ;) She also works part time and has a nice saving acct! The baby, finally a boy!, lol, just got his first part time job and is such a hard worker!
They've all grown up to be wonderful young adults! But i see day after day mail coming in for them for loans and credit cards!! It's amazing truly amazing how much credit they can get with part time jobs! Luckily, knock on wood, none have even tried yet! I think they're scared of the credit card hole, that black deep hole! Hope they stay scared! ha ha
thnks for hte kind words,
Ang

Congratulations! for the upcoming wedding of your son. Anyways it is nice that they are scared or rather well aware of the credit card fuss. Wishing your family all the good luck.
