what can be done about ruthless, abusive collection agents? My son was verbally attacked and the collection agent didn't even have the right people. Surely something can be done about people like this. The person the agent was hunting did not live at that address.

I totally agree with the post's above, the recorder can be hard to find, as Radio Shack has been sold out in our area for quite some time, an answering machine should work fine and are a lot less expensive then the actual recording devices, just make sure that the answering machine that you or your son purchases does have the record a call function. As far as the Fair Debt Collection Act. fdcpa... it is somewhat hard to understand, I have a version in layman terms that I have pasted below:

Do you have their address? If you have then a cease and desist letter should also work. Under the fdcpa, a collection agency is prohibited to threat, harass or abuse the consumers. But these agencies seldom follow the law; because collectors are aware that majority of the consumers are innocent and can be easily trapped. They will threaten you with legal actions, prison time and what not. But do not get scared, it is one of the scary tactics that the collectors use to squeeze money from people who do not even owe the debt. If they ignore your requests and keep on calling you, then you can seek help from the state attorney general and make a complaint to FTC.
