Which payday loans companies are they? Some you can send a cease and desist letter stating that you are not permitted these calls at work. They will stop. Others that are illegal and have no other means of collecting except harrassment will not until they realize they are not getting anywhre. Just keep hanging up on them and tell anyone else that gets the call to do the same. One of them is probably GFSIL aka Route 66 funding. They have middle eastern people call from the UK and harrass you. They are an illegal operation. Do not talk to them. They have several other names. All illegal.

A good manager would understand that certain things are out of your control...especially aggressive debt collectors. I am sure you have already tried to explain the situation. You definitely need to send a cease and desist letter to the company calling you. If they fail to comply, contact the Attorney General in their state as well as yours. Is the company calling you licensed to collect in your state? That tactic has worked for me like a charm.
I am sorry your boss is not understanding. Have you tried speaking with the director of human resources? He/she may be able to help. If you make a genuine effort to rectify the situation, they should cut you some slack. If not, they are not good managers and obviously don't value their employees or care when the employee is going through a difficult period.
The first time my superiors found I was being called at work, they asked me about the situation and were very understanding. HR got involved only because one of the companies was calling other offices/employees looking for me. Overall, though it was pretty embarrassing, the support they gave me was invaluable.
Good luck to you...
If you do not receive business phone calls at work a good tactic
If you do not receive business phone calls at work a good tactic is to ask your boss to tell anybody that calls for you that you are no longer employed there because of too many person calls at work.
dollars
I'm with dollars, here. If at all possible, have someone tell these idiots that you no longer work there. If that's possible for you to do, it'll work. They won't call there anymore. They will call you at home or on your cell phone, but not at work. If you can do this, it would be your saving grace. You would be rid of the pdl calls and you won't be in trouble at work any more.
