Credit Scores: Why discrepancies? And are mine any good?
Date: Thu, 07/26/2007 - 09:43
I'm new to this, but I hope someone can help me.
[1] I just checked my credit report, and it seems like there's a big difference between my scores. Here they are:
TransUnion: 708
Experian: 688
Equifax: 637
[2] Any impressions? Are these good scores? Will I be able to buy a house? I'm nervous about this and got into trouble in the past. I think I'm okay now, though my student loans haven't haven't come due yet.
Thanks, ya'll!

your scores are actually excellent, compared to the majority of Americans. You fall right in with the average-to-above-average crowd.
If you have pulled your reports from all three bureaus, go over them with a fine tooth comb, so to speak, and start disputing anything that appears to be inaccurate, or has been paid and should be reported as such on your credit reports. This will help increase your score. And be careful when looking to buy a house that you deal directly with a bank or mortgage company - not a mortgage broker. From personal experience. I ended up with no less than 12 inquiries on my credit reports because the broker was so hot to get my loan so she could get her cut of the money that she ran my credit through multiple lenders - all of which made an inquiry on my credit reports.

Thanks alot, SUEBEEHONEY70. Good to know that I'm doing okay ... But I wonder if you have any insight about why my Equifax score could be so much lower? The main difference between Equifax and the other two seems to be that my credit card companies, etc. don't seem to report to Equifax. Could that be the reason? And anyway, is this discrepancy something that could hurt me? Or do potential lenders just take some kind of average between all three reports?
Also, what's FICO? Is that a different/unrelated score from the three we've been discussing?
Thanks!

Do you see any item not updated by your creditors in the Equifax report? This could be one of the reasons of your low scores. Make sure that your file from each of the CRA is updated and showing the actual credit history with all the latest payments

Yes, quite a few of my accounts show that TransUnion and Experian have updated info from my credit cards, etc., but there's no data on the Equifax report. Why would this be the case systematically (i.e., not for just one credit account)?
And anyway, how do I rectify this?

Actually, I take that back. Upon closer inspection, it's not quite that there's absolutely no data for Equifax. On my True Credit reports, whereas for the other agencies, there are little boxes saying 'OK' or '30' (where I was late by 30 days), for Equifax, there are just blank white boxes. This is the case with Equifax for ***ALL*** of my accounts. According to True Credit's little key, those blank boxes designate 'Unknown'. Why would that be?
I will pull an online copy from the Equifax and go through each
I will pull an online copy from the Equifax and go through each item once again. After thorough research, I will know those items that are not properly updated by Equiifax and dispute.

My equifax score has always been signifantly lower than my experian and transunion scores. I checked my reports, and there is NO difference between what is reported to equifax and what is reported to the other two.

Hi Cajun
Thanks for your advice. I was also worried for quite some time. Three different Fico scores.....it was quite confusing. :? Now its pretty clear. There is actually nothing to worry about. :D

Yes Cajun I know errors in credit reports are really disturbing.
Yes Cajun I know errors in credit reports are really disturbing. Particularly when you are trying so hard to repair your score. You take all the right steps but one blemish in your report can ruin everything.
Thanks again for ur advice
Take care
