I got a letter from certegy stating that "my account was recently victimized by an employee who wrongfull removed and sold consumer information to a data broker who in turn sold a subset of that data to a limited number of direct marketing organizations."

They have my information because they handled an amazon purchase, shouldn't this be illegal, they had no right to do this.

It sounds illegal to me. It sounds as if an employee was moonlighting with another company, thus taking your information, and I am sure of others, and selling the information for pennies on the dollar to a bottom feeder company. The information is suppose to be safeguarded against being 'leaked' out of the companies database, yet an unsavory individual either sold your information illegally or the company is hiding the fact that they themselves are selling the information to make more money on the side, both scenarios are illegal and please take action by filing complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General's Office of your state and the companies state. Save the letter stating what they say happened. Also, since the charge for this taking and selling is criminal, not civil, you may also either file a report with the Secret Service, since this was across stae lines, or the F.B.I., or both.
