First received a letter last week from First national Collection Bureau. They purchased a credit card debt I had with Sears in 11/03. They are now sending a letter stating that I owe $840.54. What is the statue of limitations on purchased debt? I live in VA, but debt was incurred while I lived in NC.

Second, pulled credit report to look at how much it would take to get everything clean and Equifax has more debt than the other credit bureaus. They have debts that just say medical and only have an account number. No other information there. How do I know when these will drop off? How do I know who they are?

Please advise asap. I would like to have good credit again soon. Thanks

Send a debt validation letter to First national Collection Bureau and ask them to put the details of the debt in writing. They are bound to follow the federal laws on debt validation as mentioned in the FDCPA. Without this info, don't agree to pay anything because you want to be sure of their legit collections.

Read the last part of your credit report. It should mention the list of creditors who have reported to the bureaus. You will find their contact info there.

Accurate negative items will be removed from your credit report after seven years from the date of first delinquency. Make sure that the items listed on your file are correct. If not, they are hurting your scores.

Hi Lori

Onelamb is right. debt validation is the strongest defense against such collectors. Ask them to validate the debt. Send First national Collection Bureau a DV letter mentioning that you have received a notice from them that you owe $840.54. So you want them to mail you the documentation that shows how they calculated this amount and the proof that they have actually bought the debt from Sears. Send the letter via certified mail with a RRR.
