My wife being harassed for debt not hers (or mine)

Yet, we keep getting harassed. The latest is this Genesse Valley Associates, who phoned, got very rude, ugly..threatened to sue. After we PROVED they had the wrong person, they profusely apologized. They were trying to collect a debt for a card (Providian) that my wife has never, ever had. Or any subsidiary of Providian.
Now a few months later, they send her a threatening letter...for *another* debt. How can we get thru to these people..can we press charges against them for harassment.
I stress..we don't owe this debt, we've PROVED we didn't, that it's mistaken identity but they won't leave us alone.

I would simply send them a letter stating they are trying to collect from the wrong person and they are to cease & desist all efforts immediately.

When you finish that letter make copies, also send it certified mail with a return recipet, that is very important. Also, in the letter have them verify the debt with proof from them who and what it is and who they are trying to collect it from. There are many drafts of letters like that on this forum, but I am not sure how you can get them. I hope someone with more knowledge on this subject comes along and helps you with that and more. Hang in there, you are here now and it will be ok.

Thank you.
Should we respond in writing, though the collection letter was addressed to a similar name, but not my wife's name?

Hi jbmims
debt validation letter is indeed the best defense that a consumer has against the debt collectors. There are collectors who harass people to pay off debts which they dont owe. But what they forget is that fdcpa has given the consumers a right to ask for the validation of debt from the collectors. So, use your rights. You can go through some of the sample
letters, from the link given below.
