Hurricane Katrina has shocked all of us by causing significant damage in the southeastern part of the US. This might be the worst natural disaster that has ever hit the US. It is very painful to realize that this natural disaster has made approximately one million people homeless and around 5 million people are without power in the gulf coast.
It will take days to recover from such a painful incidence. Katrina is also expected to be the costliest natural disaster in the United States history. Let us pay our tribute to those people who will never come back.

Yes, twokid it is amazing what we take for granted. Even with all the hurricanes that hit here in Florida last year, this has been the most devastating. I could not even imagine what they are going through. It may be months before power is restored. The damage is devastating. My brother in law and my brother may be sent there for disaster relief. Let us all say a prayer for the people over there. For their safety and their well being.

Twokid, that was kind and noble of you to bring attention to such a devasting situation!
It's things like this, why I don't stress so much over my bills and debts. It's so unfortunate that you can lose everything you have...homes, cars, valuables, even human life, in an instant. We are actually very lucky to be where we are now.
THE WORSE EVER
you are abosolutely correct Roxette..i pray for everyone there and for the people that have been lost that no one has found yet.....it is an abosolute disaster and everytime i watch it on the news i can help but cry....

Ben, I feel very sorry for this loss to Charles family members and to you. I know this pain is very hard to overcome, but you should stand by their side as a strong support like their son was. You all need each other at this time very much.

Ben I am very sorry to hear about your loss. It is very hard to watch the news or even look in the paper. My nine year old was there not too long ago and my husband was due to go back to work there last week.

The naming system of hurricanes was started by The National Hurricane Center, in the year 1953. Instead of mentioning the cyclones by latitude and longitude, the center started to call them by short names. The names are used on a six-year rotation basis, which means Katrina will come up again in 2011.
The names of those hurricanes which are remembered as deadliest and costliest ones are retired and not used again. Like Ivan, Jeanne ??? that struck Florida last year, won't be used in 2010.
Katrina could result in $25billion insurance claims, which will be considered as the costliest storm of the nation. So Katrina has attained the criteria to be retired from the name list of hurricanes. We don't want another Katrina...

I believe Katrina wont be used again. It could take almost a decade to rebuild New Orleans. The damage that was done in New Orleans was much worse than the damage here in Florida. It is very devastating.

I was just seeing the news and was shocked to realize the fact that many of the people over there have started taking advantage of the situation and involved themselves in looting. Instead of being help to someone, they are becoming a menace at such crisis. And the people doing relief work over there have lots of other important work to do instead of keeping a watch on these burglars!! Sigh!!

I definitely agree with you Roxette. It is also heartbreaking to watch. My brother is headed to New Orleans next week to help with disaster relief. Is there something set up to where we could donate some of our points to donate to the people there? Someone may have suggested this, but I may not have read the thread.

Hi Rhonda28,
Very good suggestion indeed Rhonda.
We have been thinking on the same line as well.
We will certainly try to create a fund and donate towards the people affected in Katrina.
Watch out for an announcemnt in the forums on this topic.
