The letter states that I can notify the C&S lawyer office in writing that the debt is disputed by me. And the lawyers will obtain and mail to me the verification of the debt. If I still dispute the debt after that, then what happens?

Well I don't think I can just not respond. I've heard that they've served notice (fraudulently) and then have people's bank account frozen. So I have to dispute. What do I do?

Be careful of Cohen & Slamowitz! They seriously messed me over! They froze my account the last week of the month- when I had all my rent money in my account waiting for my rent check to clear! They took that as a down payment, and we had a payment plan set up for a monthly payment that I would have to call in each month.

Well, one month I called my rep "Janet" and left her a voicemail, letting her know it was me trying to make a payment. I left her 4 voicemails, and she did not respond to any. On the 5th and final voicemail, I stated that she should attempt to contact me at home and give me further instructions on what to do, or I will pay double the following month.

The following month- same problem! So I sent her a Fed Ex with two checks. A week later I get a knock on my door from the marshals office! I am now paying him my monthly fee rather than to Cohen & Slamowitz.

What I've learned from this site is that you MUST sent a debt validation letter first, you can find a sample on these boards.

Make sure you send it certified return receipt. Do this ASAP! They will need to provide you with actual proof that you owe this debt, and will stop harassing phone calls and multiple letters because while you await them to validate, all further action to collect must stop.

Good luck! [/img]

I have dealt with C & S. They worked with me without a problem and I paid the debt off AND they had the derogatory account removed from my credit reports with the approval of the original creditor. I have heard that they do freeze accounts, so do not ignore them. If the debt is yours, work out a payment arrangement.

I had no problem with them, but you should still be cautious.
