How can I find out if someone is looking for my wife because of a debt she owes?

I don't really speak to her but until I get a divorce I am liable for half of her debts. I have my credit report that says I owe money but I can't find out to who. I think that she still has bills in my name and isn't paying them! I have a feeling that she is running up debts for me. She also didn't pay money into the bank and I may have a bad check out there.

Oh no, Trauler. I'm sorry you are in this position. I know that divorce can be tricky, especially if there are parties involved who aren't being up front. Have you spoken to your divorce atty. about this? There might be some way that he/she can help. Also, you might be able to write to the credit bureau to find out who the debts are with. Is there a phone number provided on the credit report for each debt owed? Sometimes there is, I think.

Oh no! That sucks! Do you think if you contact your bank that they can help you? Maybe put the account on for deposit only status or close it and open you up a new one? Also, maybe you can put a stop on the checks you have out, contact them, and arrange to pay another way...Just some ideas...I haven't been in your situation but there has to be something you can do.

Are you on friendly terms with any of her family members that perhaps could help you locate her? Maybe contact them and inquire as to where she is or what she has been doing. Otherwise I would contact all three credit bureaus and also let your attorney know what is going on and let he/she handle it through legal means.

Good luck and keep us posted.

traul, you need to get copies of your credit reports from all three. It seems as though you're saying the debt would be in your name, so it would show up. Anything questionable, you can address. And check that bank account and see if any deposits were made or if there are any returned checks, and if so, to who. I'm sorry you have to play "investigator". But, if your wife is racking up debt in your name, it'll show up under your name. Check the bank and check the credit reports.
