I have no idea, what credit cards do you have and are any of them past-due? Do a search in the search box for any of the credit cards that you currently have, that may be past due to see what other people have to say about the collection agencies that they use.
Why don't you call them back and asked them. That way you will know for sure which one it is.

I know that's what I should do, but I don't feel like talking to anymore collection agencies. I always get intimidated and end up folding like a lawn chair when they ask for money. At least now, I know a little more about my rights. And they are ALL past due for about 2 years now.

My advice to you would be to be in contact with them and work something out just like you did. If you are willing to work with them they will be more willing to work with you. :P
If you are still uncomfortable talking to him then send him a letter. Communicate through the USPS and make sure that any arrangements that you make that they are in writing and its with payments that you can afford to pay.
If you need anyother advice just let us know one of us on here will help you.

MRS Associates
Hello Everyone!
I am new to this forum so far it seems like a great resource.
So, I will post my first question.
I also have been contacted by the above mentioned company. When the called (I did not receive and mail from them) they said they were "making a final decision that would impact my life". They said when I called them that Capital One was going to "sue me" if I did not make a decision that moment. Is this right?
Also, assuming that I owe this debt (which I am not sure of yet) is there any way to pay less and have it settled? They say I owe $5,000 but I NEVER had a card with a limit close to that. I always cancelled a card if the limit was more then $400. Thanks for all your help! :-)

I don't know about if Global Acceptance deals with credit cards or not. I had a deliquent account, with somone, and my account was 'sold' to GA. I've been dealing with them, for a short time,....in my opionion ( so far ) they are really helping me in taking care of this debt. Jacoben.if you don't think you owe any money to them, why don't you get a statement from them, on what account they say you owe. They are great about sending statements, paperwork, etc.

First of all u need to find out if this debt is urs.... Do u remember having a capital one card?? Send them a debt validation letter which more than likely they will not answer but do it to cover urself... also send cease and desist letter one in the same. Ask for a break down of the amount said owed.
Then sit back and wait to see if they answer u!
Good luck,
Ang
The Journey Continues....
Ok, So I got a call back from them again yesterday (actually they called 8 times but I was at work) and asked as nice as I could what the account number was, the amount they think I owe, and any other information they could give me. They guy put me on hold and I got transferred to the "legal department". They said I had 24 hours to pay or they would sue me and put a lien on my house. At which point I said that if they did not want to work with me over then phone that was fine and hung up.
So my question is this, what can I do? Is that legal? I am floored at this point and have no idea what to do. I am a teacher and cant afford an attorney. :(

What they are doing is HIGHLY illegal. They cannot threaten to sue you, they can just advise you when they are suing you. They absolutely cannot put a lien on your house and it is illegal for them to tell you that. Make sure you write down every time they call you and make these ridiculous statements. Deny everything about this debt, they cannot do anything to you. They are debt buyers and to tell them so pisses them off to no end. Second hire an attorney that specializes in this case like i did. I just got a settelement from another company and the MRS associates one is still ongoing.
Advice
Hello - I just stumbled on this website and wanted to ask the following: I just came home the other day and found a legal document on my stairs - it was recorded with the county and it shows me that I am being sued by a creditor. My question is it says it is a summons but does not say have to be in court or disclose a date... I don't understand how this can just be left sitting on my stairs and the other thing is - what does this mean??? They can't put a lien on my house because I am in foreclosure and trying to negotiate with the lender to modify. Then my plan was to file BK.... I am waiting to see if lender modifies my loan before bk because if they do not then I will use part of the monies I have set aside for modification and use it to pay off some of my credit that has fallen behind.... Sorry so long winded but I am just very very stressed right now
Thank you for taking the time to read this!!!!

MRS Associates
I am not eligible to declare bankruptcy until November of this year, but visited with an attorney anyway just to see what my rights are until then.
The attorney said that when a collector calls me at work or contacts friends/family to remind them of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and they are to cease and desist contacting my employer, etc. By law they have to obey, but make sure you fax a copy to them and also send a CERTIFIED letter as well for your records.
I also asked him what to do if they send me a summons (which for me he said is unlikely, but it's always on my mind). He said to honor the summons and to show-up, but when you go to court state that you don't know these people and to show the accounting that states how much you owe. That usually throws a 'money wrench' in the works and can stall them for a long time. In my case, it's just to hold them off until I can file bankruptcy.
I'm not looking forward to declaring bankruptcy (again). Mine is due mainly to medical bills and obviously from dealing with MRS Associates (probably Capitol One). I hope this helps.

So is it normal for companies like MRS associates to be unhelpful? I had a few calls from them, about a credit card I never got, and they took my number off the list. But when I called them up as a follow up (I was concerned, the name was very similar, similar enough so that it would be an awful huge coincidence if it was that similar on accident), they basically told me they had no business with me, and initially WOULDN'T even tell me the name of their company.
MRS
I have had numerous calls over the past few days from these people. They are looking for my son, and this is not his phone number. I told them that, and they were very nasty and said I could get in trouble for not taking a message for my son. I told the man this was harrassing, and he said, well, I'll just call your neighbors and see what they think; how would you like that. I told him I'd call the FTC and hung up. My son did owe Capital One sometime back. No. 1, I know they're not allowed to call me, he's not a minor. No. 2, isn't there a statute of limitations on uncollected debt?

Guest,
They can contact you only to get his phone number and/or mailing address. As far as SOL, that would be for him to suss out. SOLs vary from state to state. Send them a Cease & Desist letter (you have to tell them to stop calling in writing in order for it to be enforceable).
Credit Report
Oh I did, it's all fine. Thank you for the help though. I was just surprised at the rudeness and general uselessness of a company who won't even initially give out the full name of their business to someone who's inquiring.
