First they have to take you to court and get a court order. Have they done that? What state do you live in? Some states will bring both parties together to work out an agreement first. You are better off not letting it get to that point as a judgment will remain on your credit report for 10 years. Try contacting them and working something out. There are a few states that do not allow wage garnishment by creditors.

If I were you I would send them a cease and desist letter, stating that they only contact you through the USPS and that you will be working with a debt settlement company. That should make it so they don't call you at work.

It does not appear to be uncommon for a consumer to be sued while pursuing settlement. By all means, talk to a counselor, but I have to wonder if consolidation would be more appropriate.
