in Wisconsin what are my rights to hide my car from the re-po man?

In Wisconsin, the creditor is required to send you a 15-day cure letter stating that you have 15 days to bring the account current or else they will repo.

As far as "hiding the car" -- you really don't have any right to hide it. Believe me, the repo guys aren't just going to give up -- they will monitor your house/work and wait for you drive somewhere, and then they will grab the car wherever they can find it.

If, for some reason, you do a "really good job" of hiding the car -- then the creditor will go to court and get an order of replevin. In a replevin order, a judge will send a sheriff out and force you to give up the car. If you still refuse to give up the car to a sheriff, then you can be arrested for contempt of court.

Either way, the creditor will get the car if you stop paying for it. If they have to go to court over it, then you will have to pay court costs on top.

Also, I'm not too familiar with WI laws. But in Illinois, is can be a misdemeanor to "conceal" the vehicle:
(720 ILCS 240/1) (from Ch. 121 1/2, par. 157.41)
Sec. 1. Any person purchasing personal property under a conditional sales contract who, during the existence of such conditional sales contract and before the conditions thereof have been fulfilled, sells, transfers, conceals or in any manner disposes of such property, or causes or allows the same to be done without the written consent of the holder of title is guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.
Take care when "hiding" the car from the repo man. They are hired and paid to find that car, and they WILL find it. I know a repo man who does this for a living, and he has gone so far as to have the police accompany him to the debtor's house to force them to unlock the garage where the car was hiding, etc. I don't know what the law says in WI about that, but what is the point of hiding it? They will find it eventually. You're not going to make your situation any better by hiding it. Not trying to be harsh, just stating facts.

And just a side note regarding them picking the car up at work - I have a relative who had her car repossessed. She was at work at a "big box" store when the truck pulled in, hooked onto her car, and took it, right out of the parking lot. It took over a month for her to be able to get her personal belongings out of the car.

If you are on the road to repossession of your car, you need to either find a way to get current with the payments or give up the car. Hiding it can only lead to more trouble.

SueBee and DC are right- they will find it. As far as "rights" you have none when it comes to hiding your car.

It still is the persons' car you got it from until it is paid for, then it is yours.

I have a friend who does repos- sometimes my youngest son does. They are amazing at knowing where to look and how to get it.!

I also had a friend, who years ago, got her cat towed, by the time she got to it- her cell phone was gone- along with a whole lot of stuff she had from shopping- it had been sitting in a big basement-open to anyone.

Why not put all the energy of hiding your car into finding a way to work out something with them- alot less stress!! Karen

Do not try to hide your car. Work with the finance company and maybe you can come up with an arrangement for payments. They don't want to have the expense of hiring a repo man and then going through the hassle of selling it. Because if they sell it at a loss and you still owe money on it you are still responsible for whatever dollar amount is left on the car and the collections fees.

Register for a free debt consultation and a debt counselor will call you and give you some options on what to do. But please don't try to hide the vehicle you will only get into more trouble and I don't think that is worth it.

Have you told the bank your situation? Many times they are willing to work with you because with most notes you are upside down and if they repo it and auction they will loose money.

Call them. If the customer service person is snotty or rude, as for a supervisor. Explain your situation-and be honest. Ask them if you can possibly defer some of the back payments to the end of the loan. They will probably ask for some form of payment now also. Just don't make any payments arrangements that you can't keep, because they are often willing to work once or twice, but are not into being bulls*#ted.

DO NOT hide it from a repo man. If it comes down to being repo'd often you can call the bank and make arrangements to have it picked up where you won't be embarrassed and make sure you have it cleaned out (no personal effects at all).

Good luck
Chrissy
