Question regarding collection agencies...

I usually post over on the payday loan forums, but I had a question about debt consolidation.
I got myself into a mess with payday loans earlier this year. I have cleared most of the it up, (I have 2 outstanding that my state attorney general is handling and one that I am handling and am in the process of filing complaints).
To make a long story short, I had fallen behind on a lot of my bills due to the loans. I managed to keep my credit cards up to date, but I had purchased some items on QVC and HSN that were on their easy pay plan (where they break up the payments each month) and couldn't keep up with the payments. Now they have forwarded the accounts to collection agencies for payment.
I owe QVC about $1,000 and HSN about $400. Is there anyway a debt management company would work with a collection agency so I could pay these companies off a little at a time (I can't afford to pay them all at once). I have sent DV letters to the CAs, and am awaiting their response now...
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Jen! I don't know a whole lot about this topic, but I would think that you might be able to work out an arrangement with the CA. I think that sometimes they are more willing to work with you than the original creditor. If not, a debt management program seems like it would help, since it is basically unsecured debt, I would think. Have you tried to contact them?

Hi Eleroo!
I did contact them once (Nationwide who is collecting for QVC) when the account was first forwarded to them (back in May) and asked if I could pay it off a little at a time. The girl I spoke with didn't seem to know much, she told me that they can divide the payments into three, which doesn't really help me much. In general, I don't really like to deal with CAs over the phone though, I prefer to do it by mail so I can have a paper trail.
I don't blame you. Paper trails are good because I'm sure CA's a
I don't blame you. Paper trails are good because I'm sure CA's are notorious for giving misinformation. They divided it into three payments? That doesn't seem like a big help at all. Some of these places crack me up! Someone calls them requesting help and instead of helping they see just how much more they can screw with them!!! I would definitely see if a debt management program could help with them.
Isn't that crazy? And she told me 3 payments was "pushing it"!

I sent them a DV and still haven't heard back from them though.

Jen, I always thought that collection agencies had to accept any offer that was made. I believed this for a long time. But now I see how wrong I was

collection agencies do not have to accept payment plans unless they have gone though court already and a judge decided what was going to be paid and when.
To put it simple, the balance has been called due in full. Actualy breaking up the amount in 3 payments is pretty generous for the account just now coming in to collections.
If you feel that yoyu are unable to do that then just mail your payments in. They will post them to your account but will still continue collection activity.

Exactly as FYI said if u send them the payments they WILL take them and also if it comes to be that they DO indeed sue u for the balance it will look good to a judge taht u have been trying to make payments to them and he may keep them the same! (now that's a big if on such small amts, to be sued on but possible)

Jen- FYI is right, they don't have to accept anything, and most contracts staate they can call for the balance in full if you defalut, etc.
What I have done is, I took my lowest balance, yours would be 400.00, and paid more on it than the regular payment to get it paid off sooner. Then I took that payment and added it to the payment for the next highest one, and so on. It was super tight for a while financially, but, as I saw progress, it made it worth while.
I have also sent payments by money order and certified, return receipt mail when they said they wouldn't do payments.
Again FYI is right- they will take the payments, but collection efforts won't stop until the debt is paid.
Good Luck..KAren

So, the chances that they will work with a debt consolidation company are pretty slim?
