I'm starting a debt consolidation program. Talked to my counselor & she said if I had at least 1/2 of my payment to send it to her & she'll start to contact my creditors. Cool! That was this morning.

Then at lunch my mother calls me at work-says that Discover card is looking for me. I call. My counselor told me to explain that I'm in a credit counseling program & to give them their phone # and my client ID number. I called Discover & did just that. The first girl was fine. Took the info & then put me on hold. Then I get transfered to a collector. She said if my Discover payment is 65 days or more past due (which it is now) that Discover WON'T work with the debt consolidation company. The collection agent also went on to say that the debt consolidation company won't help me any as they just make the minimum payment thats due & I'm still responsible for late fees & interest rates! So the flipping collection rep got me to agree to make a payment for $195 today at Sears-that would at least make me 30days past due & then Discover will work with them. I REFUSED TO GIVE HER MY CHECKING OR SAVINGS INFO!!!

So then I freaked! I have $280 saved for the debt consolidation company. Was sending that to her today. So I called the company & spoke to my rep. She said NOT to pay Discover & they were just trying to scare me into paying. She assured me that Discover will work with them & that she currently has customers that are 6 months past due & Discover will accept their proposal. She said that all the creditors are like that-they want to scare you into giving the money to them & to next time just keep telling the creditor to contact my credit counselor as she is handling my accounts.

Today was just such a horrible day!!!!!

Hey lawn1016,

Yes you will probably get even more calls before your proposals kick-in. It is normal form what I understand the will stop calling you when your counceling company & your creditors get on the same page. Just keep your checking & savings info private and insist on them calling your debt consolidator.

Good luck!

Discover stopped calling. They did call Federated Financial, but that was before the had all the money. So Federated told them that I am enrolled in a plan for my Discover card but that they can't tell them more until all the money is received. Haven't heard back from Discover so I'm happy.

I did get an email from discover (I get all my letters in email from them) stating that since I've entered into a program-which means I no longer have the ability to pay on my own & need help, they are canceling my Discover card.

I called Federated to see if this was typical & they said yes. I should also get a letter from Chase (the other one in the plan) saying pretty much the same thing.

Sherrie, my consolidation company stops the late fees & lowers the interest. I was paying nearly 28% on Discover & Chase. I think Discover went to 12% & Chase to 9%.

Karen, I'm always asking them questions. Even the stupidest little thing I'll call them about. They never make me feel stupid for calling. The other day I said "I'm sorry if this is a stupid question..." The rep was nice enough to tell me that it wasn't stupid & if I'm paying them this money to help me that I SHOULD be calling with questions.

Also...if you ever need help call a rep here at debt consolidation. I did that the other night with the whole Citicard fiasco & the rep was great in guiding me through everything I needed to do.

Good. :-) I am wanting to get into a settlement program. I also have Chase and Discover...among others that I need to get things worked out with. Make sure you keep posting about your experience. I can't afford to go into a program yet, but I'm hoping early next year I will be able to get into something.

lawn - I'm so glad to hear things are looking up for you!

It's definitely a common occurrence with debt consolidation or settlement that your credit card accounts will get cancelled/closed.

I was working with a credit counseling agency years ago when I hit my first hard financial time, and they had a collage made up of cut-up credit cards they received from their clients over the course of ONE YEAR. It covered most of an entire wall in their office. It contained something like 3,000 credit cards, cut into pieces and arranged so the colors made a design. Kinda cool, but also a major visual reminder when you walked into the office of what kind of debt consumers in America face on a daily basis! One of the requirements of their program was that you hand them your credit cards and sign an agreement stating they would be cut up and the accounts closed.

Hi Ele!

I know that Discover is hard to deal with on your own. But the counselers told me that they are going to pay them $155...my typical monthly was $195, so that's a good deal I think...its more than %50!

I just hope they both accept the proposals. Otherwise, not sure what else I could do!
