My wife and I currently have a high credit card debt, however we are able to make our payments and have made them all on time. For someone in our situation where our credit is not bad, if we go into a debt consolidation program wouldn't that reflect poorly on our credit record?

You and your wife are having high credit card debt but irrespite of that you are paying off in time. Further you and your wife have good credit report. This is a very good sign that you are keeping up your payments in time. If you want to register yourself in the debt consolidation program then you can easily do it.
