Number that called me was 970-687-0713

Googled it and didn't find much. Was in regards to a Chase account. I have an account with Care One Credit and was about to start making payments when I get this call today.

They claimed the proposal was declined and that if I wasn't intending to pay the debt they would begin legal proceedings. I asked them why I haven't received anything in the mail from them and they said they can only send me something via email or fax. I also asked them if they purchased the debt or were just representing them and they said they were representing them.

I called CareOne and they said it wasn't possible for the proposal to have been declined because it wasn't sent yet and that it was likely just a debt collection agency blowing a bunch of hot air.

Should I just ignore these guys and go ahead with sending my money until I send in a payment and see what happens?

I agree with Ladybug. I think alot of CAs will say anything just to try to freak you out enough to send them money. Also, I think that there is something strange that is legal (not sure if that makes any sense) that will let a ca call themselves a law firm. Not sure if they are linked with a law firm or if the just are like "subcontracted" to collect debts. But I don't think they can do anything to you.

I don't know about it being legal, but it is certainly not ethical. But, ethical is not high on these companies' list of priorities. You might want to look up the fdcpa to see if this violates any of the collection practices that they must obide by. They certainly don't have a case for you not wanting to pay the debt, as you have included it in your plan. So I don't know why they would have made that claim.
