Love, you are not going to go to jail. Please give us more information about this debt. It sounds as if you have been threatened illegally by a bill collector. Breath and let us know the situation!

Take a deep breath- these people threaten all sorts of things- they can't arrest you-unless you robbed a bank. And there are no more debtors prisons, or I would have been there long ago!!
Please do as lawn suggested, tell us what type of debt, the companies you are dealing with, the state you are in, and if you are in default on these-no personal info please..Good Luck..KAren

I know this can seem so frightening, but to be honest, if someone calls me and tells me they are going to file federal charges to have me arrested for a debt, then I would bet my last dollar that he isnt a lawyer at all. And pretending to be a lawyer for the purpose of collecting a debt is very illegal. So, thats two mistakes the person made already, both are violations of federal law and both carry a penalty of $1000 plus any actual damages, payable to you from that collector.
Give us some more info and we will help you through this one. There is not one single kind of debt that someone in here has not encountered, believe me!

Chances are they are blowing smoke up your back side. I had one threaten to take my cat away (that passed away about 9 years ago?) if I didn't make a payment. :scratches head:

Loveanurse (and yes, I love two of them, twins to be exact). The person who called you might have been fron a collection "attorney's firm" but was not an attorney. Most likely from some zit faced person working in the call center from "law firm" and breaking the law. You can't be jailed for a civil matter (ie., a debt). From now on I'd record the calls, if legtal in your state, and sue them for any violations.
