W&A What Can I Say?

I was a college student when I got an MBNA card and I racked up $1000.00 on it. I didn't really know what I was doing financially (I was idiotic) so instead of paying it off, I would pay the account occasionally. Post-college, I had some issues with jobs, etc. but in the last two years, I made a commitment to pay off my credit card bill which had been sold to Wolpoff and Abramson.
When I first contacted W&A with a proposal to settle the debt, they said I owed $6,000.00. They wouldn't budge on a settlement. I just got hired as a new teacher and I figured it would be worth it to just pay them off so we settled on a payment plan of $250.00 a month. I paid them diligently every month through their stupid website.
I was down to $2700.00 and I just got a bonus this fall so my plan was to pay the whole account off when BAM--I get two letters in the mail from the Queens county marshall's office saying that two judgments of $3000 and $5200 respectively had been placed against me from W&A. I was in shock. I'm getting married soon and every little penny counts. From owing them $2700, I suddenly owed them over $8000.00!!!! For the same account?!!!???
I contacted W&A and the paralegals there seemed just as confused as I was. I spoke with them over a few days and finally one of them said, "Just pay us off here and it'll be fine." I was pay them off the $2700 that I rightfully owed right then and there when the paralegal I was speaking to suddenly hung up on me. When I requested his extension again, it was busy. I finally got through to him and he said, "Umm, I just got done talking to the attorneys about your account and umm you will have to pay the marshal what you owe. There's some special code on your account."
What code would that be? The "Let's screw this person over and have them endlessly give us money code"?
I'm so afraid to take any steps against these jerks...I just don't want to deal with them. What's to ever stop them from coming after me over and over again? What is the point of paying off a debt when they suddenly sue you for more money than you ever thought possible? I'm thinking about declaring bankruptcy just so they'll leave me alone. I know I'm young and just starting out but I just don't know what to do.
And you know what...
I know that you can fight these guys but I just don't want to constantly live like this. I don't want to have to look over my shoulder or wonder when I'm going to come home again with a default judgment against me. And hiring a lawyer is not cheap either.
Did you ask for a validation letter, explaining where the 8000.0
Did you ask for a validation letter, explaining where the 8000.000 in debt came from. You are legally entitled to get this info from the creditor.
Were u served with a summons for these "so called" judgements??
Were u served with a summons for these "so called" judgements?? If u were not properly served then u may be able to fight these jerks!

That is true, I remember when I was getting a judgement for Suntrust they had to physically give ME the papers. I kind of 'hid' for a while because I knew I was doing bankruptcy which would have stopped their proceedings anyway.
