I agree with Ang. Any admittance to the debt would start the SOL all over again. I'd imagine that means a DV letter would start the SOL again...
How old is the debt?

I think, and this is my opinion, that it's the same in every state as far as what constitutes starting the clock over! If u admit to owing this debt it starts over from that time as far as i've been told!
But in a dv letter ur not necessarily admitting to the debt actually the opposite, u want them to prove u owe this debt!
I will ask in the morning, past my bedtime.

Thanks for all the replies. I asked the question on law guru and was told that a written acknowledgment was enough to re-start. I think I've re-started the clock. Does email count as a written acknowledgement? Or would it have to be a signed letter to stand up in court?
Thanks

Always make sure that you owe the debt before you agree to it. Most people know about what their debts are and how much they are for aproximately. What they might not know is what collection agency is collecting on them. It is very important that you pay the right people.
I've very recently had an account placed in my files where the debtor made arrangements with "another agency". Well accounts in my files come directly from the creditor and have never been placed in collections for a 3rd party before. He had been duped and is now out a couple of hundred dollars.
